New Moon Discussion
By Mitchy
New moon to me is a new cycle, a
new start on something. Somehow I have
. sort of
.
a need to celebrate this moon, but have never done so. Because
I was told that the energies this night is very strong, like
full moon, but at new moon the energies are negative; dark forces.
I do not believe in dark forces when
it comes to the universe itself. But I do believe that people
have dark areas inside, which we all have to convert in to light.
Some people are darker than others. But to me the universe is
good. So why shouldnt I celebrate a new moon? We strive
to live by the moon cycles, but cannot celebrate grandmother
moon unless shes full.
Are you celebrating the new moons?
Why or why not? What are the risks? Why do a lot of people think
that a new moon is equal dark forces/energies?
(I dont know if this is important
for my need to celebrate a new moon but Im born two days
before new moon, and Im baptized two days before a new
moon)
Wynsong:
I celebrate
the new moon as a time to put things I wish to grow out there...to
plant the seeds of creation.
Because I do not
see either creation or destruction as positive or negative in
their essential nature....I look at the energy of the moon's
light as a symbol of the cycle of creation and destruction...that
we can watch monthly. This
is not Native North American Spirituality, (although there may
be this story attached to the cycle, in one of them), it is
one I borrowed from another, at the moment unremembered traditional
stories or myths....
The moon grows
into her fullness and then something takes a bite out of her
until she is gone again....
Cycle repeats.
So for me the
new moon is the apex, the turning point between utter destruction
of what was, and the beginning of something new.
Like the beginning
of yin energy at the moment that yang energy is at its greatest
(and vice versa).
Darkness is the
element of the feminine...the deep darkness of the Mother's
soil, the deep, darkness of a den in which birth occurs, the
deep darkness of the feminine womb...into which seeds are placed,
and grow with the returning light.
Just another view.
CinnamonMoon:
Thank you for sharing, Wyn,
certainly this is one of the various aspects of Grandmother
Moon's energy and ways. There are so many sides to her, and
her mysteries.
Mitchy:
Thanks for sharing, wynsong7.
You explained this in a very, very, fine way. It hit me like
a snowball and made me think. Im very glad to hear, that
Im not the only one who wish to celebrate grandmother
Moon in some way or another. I actually held my first new moon
ceremony last night, and thanked grandmother for a new cycle.
I felt so good afterwards. Thanks for showing me the way.
Paah Wenchokws:
I
and a group of women celebrate each new moon in the sauna. The
sauna is located on a beautiful piece of property. Washing or
releasing old, making the way for the new.
DragonHawk:
Mitchy,
In Celtic lore the new moon is the start of the growing phase
of that Moon: the new energies coming in that we can work with
through the growing to the full moon before the moon starts
to wane and we reflect on what we have learnt: so the waxing/growing
phase is a phase of action the full moon almost like a standstill
as we wait for what we tried to achieve to come to pass and
in the waning phase we reflect on what we learnt at full moon
given our active energies in the growing phase.
Generally
a dark phase in Celtic lore is generally a more feminine phase
wheras a light phase is more masculine: the Celtic Year starts
in the dark winter of the year at Halloween and the feminine
brings forth life.....
So to me,
if anything, the new moon is the more positive as we can put
our intent into that phase, whereas at full moon we are reaping
what we have sewn so to speak and it might not be to our taste.
I think
the fears come or we see it as positive dependent on our perception
of what darkness means: to me it is the creative place that
we can place our intent in/upon, but traditionally it is perceived
as a negative force: perhaps there is a subconscious fear of
our own power in the fear perception of darkness?
I know
people do, but, like you, personally I don't believe in a force
that opposes goodness in the Universe and that the forces people
perceive as evil are formed purely as a means to be able to
perceive goodness: as in a "without darkness there could
not be light" sorta way i.e. it is our intent that creates
a force that opposes goodness - but that force is neutral (and
the same as goodness) - but our need to bring forth our will
in a manner we know deep down opposes goodness by our intent
turns that force into a negative force or if our perception
is negative we can turn energy we receive from positive to negative.
So, it
appears to me the dark moon would be the best time to celebrate:
to put positive energies and intent into the coming growth of
the moon: but I don't know if that is a commonly/traditionally
held view. But before I started such ceremonies I would want
to learn about the moons experientially over a yearly moon cycle:
feel each moons effects in a more passive manner before I started
placing too much intent into cycles I had not yet learnt a little
understanding of.
CinnamonMoon:
Very well said Wolfie, I
learned to work with the Moon along those same lines with the
same perspective. I think this too could tie to the Moon being
seen as both masculine and feminine in its energy depending
on the cultural sacred point of view. Just thinking out loud
in the moment of where that may stem from, it seems interwoven
to me. Anyway, I think you expressed that very nicely, thank
you.
Mitchy, Wyn and Pahh, thank you for
starting this thread and sharing in it, we are seeing different
perspectives and I like that. They're not really conflicting,
merely showing the different energies and faces of the Moon,
how they can be perceived. Like Wolfie mentioned, I believe
the energy is neutral and that intent determines what is perceived
as good or bad. I know that is what drives the energy into focused
directions both in the teachings I've received and by experience.
So depending on perspective and intent the will sets that neutral
energy into direct motion. It's a universal perspective that
thoughts are things, words have power, and actions bring reactions.
I like to observe the different weaving that's done this way,
I learn a little each time and it stretches my mind sometimes
to see what else I might do if..... and it's interesting to
see how the common threads go in new directions. There is truth
in things you've all shared that stands out and that's what
makes this rich.
Mitchy:
Thanks to all of you for
sharing your point of view on new moons. There is much symbolism
in it with the sauna. I like the idea. And Wolfie, in general
Im very pleased with what you wrote. But I especially
like this:
Generally a dark phase in Celtic
lore is generally a more feminine phase wheras a light phase
is more masculine: the Celtic Year starts in the dark winter
of the year at Halloween and the feminine brings forth life.....So
to me, if anything, the new moon is the more positive as we
can put our intent into that phase, whereas at full moon we
are reaping what we have sewn so to speak and it might not be
to our taste.
And I agree with you that it must
be some subconscious fear when people talk about dark forces
for new moon. Im not sure if this is a special thing for
witches/wiccans but I have never heard NA talk about fear when
it comes to new moon. Im not into Witchcraft/wicca but
I have met a few.
Anyway, Im glad for this sharing
which shows us how different we are. Which is good. In that
way we can all grow.
BlueButterfly:
Hi
Mitchy, I've only just started working with the moon energies
this past few weeks. I'm learning as I go along, but found that
a releasing ceremony for healing I did was really powerful,
which spurred me on to do another creative/manifestation ceremony
with the new moon too. It's all good!!

I'd love to hear
more about this ceremony, Butterfly! I am currently experiencing
this new moon in a very emotional way so I know there must be
some stuff for me to release and say good bye to! Great thread
everyone!
BlueButterfly:
Hi
Enchantra, I'll mail you!
Mitchy:
I like your approach to
learning about the new moon, Butterfly. Thanks for sharing.
EagleSinging:
I don't have a particular
ceremony, but I am aware of the New Moon and its growth into
fullness that I have to look forward to. Consistently my dreams
become more pronounced after the New Moon, get radically clear
during the week of the Full Moon and then become relatively
quiet after the Full Moon. Then it begins again.
So, I tend to use my awareness of
the stages of the moon to place my focus on what is important
for me to know generally (asking Creator to show me that; it
isn't for me to determine but that isn't to say that I don't
ask for guidance in dreams sometimes). I will tend to see themes
in my dreams over a few days after the New Moon and then I work
with the energy of those dreams toward the Full Moon for better
understanding and awareness.
I love doing that so much that when
the clarity and intensity of my dreams subside after the Full
Moon, I want more when instead what I know I should be doing
is resting and recharging before the cycle starts again! LOL
