Seeking spiritual enlightenment
encompasses many aspects of attunement to the Sacred Energies
of the universe. These attunements reside within nature, it
is in the life force where they play out, and it is up to you
to take responsibility for discovering them. My experiences
have been events that took place under everyday situations,
in Medicine Wheel settings, at sacred sites, along Sacred Energy
lines, and still others that seemingly came of their own accord.
I have known them both in and out of trance states and found
that in either case, the enlightenment has always been there.
Little by little science is beginning
to accept the precepts demonstrating bits and pieces of old
teachings. It is, in my opinion, nearly impossible to find physical
evidence of the intangible--though it has been done. It has
been found that prayer and positive thoughts projected towards
microbes or individuals seem to affect the outcome of growth
and healing. Spiritual leaders have known this for centuries
and it did not take a laboratory to prove it to them. Governments
are working on mind projection, doctors re studying near-death-experiences,
and slowly but surely some of these are being proven to work.
Those who have experienced these events know that we are a long
way from dissecting spirituality itself...if it ever happens.
What is important is that they do take place, they do later
lives, and they do lead to spiritual growth and enlightenment.
Once these experiences begin to
take place for you it will soon be discovered that a new reality
has come into existence. Your studies will take place within
nature and experience will become your most reliable source
of information. While discovering that there is much that goes
beyond the physical realm there is also the recognition that
the mundane world is drawn back its curtain of illusions. The
experience of enlightenment is a powerful one and often quite
surprising. It comes in a wide variety of forms where an inspired
moment of thought, a remarkably vivid sacred dream, or the words
of an inanimate voice will trigger conceptual enlightenment.
It may strike like a thunderbolt as a seemingly random event
appears to take place without conscious intent.
There is an old saying: "When
the student is ready the teacher will appear." That is
just what happens. Once you begin to seek enlightenment your
inner spirit begins to stir. This in turn creates a linking
energy wave that reaches out to Spirit and things begin to happen.
The intent behind them is the conscious or unconscious magnetic
attraction of energies that contain information. Simply by your
willingness to be open to such events allows you to recognize
them as they present themselves. They are present in multiple
situations since exposure to the energies and
spiritutal realms constantly surround our daily lives.
The conscious mind has learned to
tune them out or to quiet the noise as we focus instead on more
immediate concerns. By becoming inundated with the physical
reality and consumed with functioning within that realm the
spiritual aspects of our lives become stifled. Initially effort
must be applied to allow the facts to emerge. With this knowledge
a unification of the physical and spiritual worlds occurs. The
Earth Mother is stirring from a deep slumber. She has been denied
for too long. When you discover that all Gods and Goddesses
are one, all religions are one, all people are one, then you
begin to heal your prejudices and the wrongs we have put upon
one and other. That healing allows the necessary room to share
and grow from our combined knowledge and experiences. This will
result in humanity's ability to move forward with pride, purpose,
and spiritual awareness walking our paths with impeccable integrity.
The effort it takes in not demanding,
it is a transformation that comes over you, a realization that
you are a part of the whole. Your perceptions change dramatically
when this takes place. While religion is a highly private issue
and one that should not be infringed upon, there are many traditions
in the world today designed to bring about various forms of
enlightenment. It is the spirituality that is the common factor
here, and one that provides us with a starting place. To undergo
enlightenment does not require you to change your faith, to
follow a new creed, or to commit to some sort of sacrilege to
any vows you have taken. There is a saying within Christianity:
"Knock and the door shall be opened to you". Well,
that is what you are doing when you seek enlightenment.
Every individual upon this planet
has a birthright that allows them to follow whichever form of
religious or spiritual practices they so choose. The Powers
That Be, and the entities that serve them, exist in many forms.
The path I am presenting here is certainly not the only one,
however, you can benefit from what this school of thought has
to teach. It is all too easy to say vision quests and out-of-body
experiences are the result of self-induced hallucinations and
then dismiss them. The crux of the issue is that these events
do take place, do bring enlightenment, do provide for growth
and personal development in a positive and progressive manner.
It is not a pseudo-science that is being presented but a very
real experience--one that takes place in dimensional realms
and Otherworld settings.
Clearly there is a heightening of
awareness in society today that is calling for a reunion of
the physical and spiritual worlds. Perhaps human evolution is
progressing and through these awarenesses we are supposed to
exercise our spirituality using the other ninety percent of
our brains. Could the end of the world that is touted by the
doomsayers simply be the end of the world as we know it while
creating the beginning of a new and enlightened way of life?
I think so. The shamanic view gifts us with the opportunity
to see not our differences, but our similarities, our common
links, and the universal truths that exist in these teachings.
They must, of course, be adapted to our time and place upon
this earth-walk but the basic tenants will always remain.
The process of attaining these altered
states and contact with the Otherworlds is the same. In the
end it is all about spiritual evolution. Why should we separate
or intelligence from our spirituality? Does it not make more
sense to combine the two and come to know balance and harmony
in our lives? Through the art of meditation you attune your
consciousness and learn to listen for specific spiritual insights.
This permits conscious awareness of personal energies and those
of the universe as they pass through our bodies. You can actually
feel the flow of energy with each breath.
The collective consciousness of which
so many speak is the wisdom of the universe. It is much like
a cosmic spiritual library that retains the history of all thoughts
and events that have happened. When this powerful source is
tapped a need to name it often arises. This seems to come from
the desire to justify and explain our experiences. It is simply
the oneness with the life force and its consciousness...the
energy force that permeates all that exists on an intellectual
level with Spirit.
Most of the time when someone is
learning to meditate it is suggested that they isolate themselves
from all outside distractions, disconnect phones if they are
indoors, and lock themselves away. This is not bad advice. It
works.
Then they are told to close their
eyes, breathe deeply, perhaps chant to focus the mind and prevent
it from wandering. Finally they begin their visualization process.
Again, it is good advice and it works. Years ago when I was
beginning to meditate I had the most impossible mind to keep
in line. It seemed that just when I thought I had the hang of
it I would find it had a will of its own and drifted or zipped
around like an unruly child. I thought I had blown the session
and would never learn to master this skill. One day I was reading
some book on the subject and there was a little phrase that
turned on the light for me: "When the mind wanders simply
bring it back." What a breakthrough! Enlightenment had
struck! I found the answer! Well, initially I had to apply the
technique more than I was sure anyone else had ever had to do
but it worked.
When I did get my mind in order
my big toe would twitch. I would get a cramp somewhere. I would
get an itch where I could never reach it. I kept falling back
to square one. Something was going on and I realized that my
intent was being tested. When I figured that out I also realized
that the relaxation techniques to ease muscle tensions had a
definite purpose and began to apply them. This process worked
and my body began to behave itself. What a concept! Still, my
mind was very active and would not quiet down totally. I was
bringing it back to the moment over and over again and finding
that frustration had a way of sneaking up on me. That is until
I discovered a little trick of my own and my meditation took
off like a meteor.
I discovered this wonderful little
secret quite by accident while reprimanding my youngest daughter
for something she had done. She chose to plug her ears to shut
out my words with her increasing displeasure of my lecture.
Well, it did not work, I pulled her hands away and she was forced
to listen. Later that day she and her sister began arguing and
I found myself doing the same thing. I had plugged my ears to
shut them out and BINGO! Another light went on in my mind. I
sent the girls out in the yard to play, went into my room, shut
the door, and went on to plug my ears. It got very quiet.
I used my index fingers to do this
and placed my thumbs upon the pulse points of my throat. I could
feel my heartbeat and hear the sound of blood coursing through
my veins. I closed my eyes and found the stillness. I listened
to the sound of my breathing, slowed it to a comfortable rhythm,
and began to relax. I started at my toes and inched my way up
my body. It took me awhile to realize that when you arrive at
your head you had to relax everything but your mind to avoid
the rather large pitfall of falling asleep. Today it is second
nature and I can apply it anywhere I happen to be.
Following the sound or rhythm of
your breathing permits you to slow it down even more and then
you are able to follow it within yourself, into your own sacred
space and center. I share this experience because I want you
to know that no one is perfect and we all carry baggage of some
sort with us. Technique alone became an initial obstacle for
me and through persistence I conquered it. I thought I had a
major breakthrough on my hands in the beginning; little did
I know then what a major breakthrough was. At any rate, I learned
to meditate and then what? I mean, I was relaxed, I did the
deep breathing, I was centered, now what? Oh yes...focus, concentrate,
meditate.
Well, I did and I was off and running.
Most teachings have a basis of going within to find that which
you are seeking. You must know how to find your inner self,
your ore, before you can project it outward. This is the first
step to attaining the oneness with Spirit. It allows you to
shut out everything else for the moment, to attune your senses,
to be present in the Now. My little discovery had become an
instantaneous method of experiencing a slightly altered state
of consciousness. I was alert, aware, functional, and focused--centered
between the worlds.
It does work and you may as well
try it right now. You need to nothing more than plug your ears,
touch your pulse, close your eyes, and breathe slowly letting
each breath draw you into yourself. Gradually relax your body.
That is all there is to it. Instant proof! You will experience
the first step of awakening and it is so simple. Certainly you
may go ahead and use tools to achieve a deeper state of oneness.
I did not invent my method. It was discovered by a child long
ago. Children down through the ages copied the act and I simply
re-discovered it, improved on a very old technique, and gave
it a new application. It is a rare case of near-instant gratification.
I assure you, most instances are not; they require patience,
effort, and practice to be effective, but they are not difficult
as you will see. The reason I offer this to you is that I want
you to have some grasp of what an altered state of consciousness
is.
Knowing how it can be achieved without
any tools, or very few of them, is very beneficial. Tools are
only items that allow you to remain focused. Yes, certain steps
must be followed to achieve a greater depth of true enlightenment,
but it is still very basic. Use tools if you like, there is
nothing wrong with them. I use them myself on occasion, but
for the most part I am able to work simply and efficiently by
myself and you can too.
The state of altered consciousness
is often perceived as a religious experience, ecstasy, or even
magic. The ability to accomplish it is the ability to transcend
the physical emerging into another dimension. It is awesome
the first time and each time that follows. You will probably
have difficulty finding words to describe it; that does not
change, though you may find a few. I tis always through the
experience itself that we come to true understanding. You must
feel it allowing all your senses to be activated beyond their
normal ranges. You will discover you can do things with them
instinctively that you would never have deemed possible. It
is exciting and very powerful when the moment arrives.
Some people are frightened by spontaneous
experiences and feel they are going out of their mind...actually
they are, but only into Spirit. True Medicine is simply the
ability to transcend the mundane and experience the oneness
with the energy of Spirit and the universe as they unite. The
body is but the temple in which the spirit resides and from
which it emerges through altered states. Once the awakening
begins on a conscious level it is free to leave the temple and
enter other dimensions at will. Consciousness and its control
are critical to this experience and that control is gained through
the process of meditation, visualization, and projection.
These processes take you into the
realm of your imagination where you begin to work with the imagery.
This is where you will perceive altered states clearly and work
with them to hone your skills. Once this is understood work
progresses much more expediently. Ultimately each individual
is responsible for their own energy and what is done with it.
Your negative energy can be released in positive ways and you
can cleanse yourself of it. Learn to recognize yourself as a
spirit having a physical body rather than a body with a spirit...there
is a difference. In this way all of life is linked, blended,
aligned, and experienced. Make it your goal to dwell in the
Now.
My father once told me advice is
dirt cheap. He said I would only use it if I liked it. As usual
he was right. All too often I needed the experience itself to
know and grow. He was a very wise person and I do take his advice
as gifts of wisdom today. Any advice given in this body of work
is done with this knowledge in mind, and the experiences I have
had to personally support it. I hope you will heed my cautions
where they exist, but recognize that your path may call for
you to experience such events first-hand. I do urge you to be
wise enough to listen and see any potential pitfalls.
Prior to working with Sacred Energy
or visiting a sacred site there are preparations to take into
account. These include drinking only pure water and partaking
only of pure uncooked foods. The body is then purged through
a sweat ceremony or smudging and fasting. Purification ceremonies
that allow the individual to shed negative influences include
ritual breathing to bring energy into the body. There is also
meditation to get into the right frame of mind. Balancing these
energies and centering the self allows you to receive the energy
deep within yourself. If gifts are to be received these specific
acts are required to be fulfilled.
The process itself can be relatively
short or comprise days of preparation. Ritual prayers are used
to pay homage to the Spirit of Place, Great Mystery, and the
Earth Mother. Requests for specific assistance and detailed
reasons for it are given, including how the gifts of enlightenment
will be used in the future. The preparations that take place
are always relative to the purpose at hand. Deep meditation
will lead into trance and the desired altered state. Through
ritual the combination of sounds, images, movement, and location
all aid in bringing about the state being sought. Through patience
and practice altered states of deeper consciousness are achieved.
A focused destination allows this to happen. Colors become intensified,
auras are radiant, and the senses are extremely heightened.
The qualities of Leys, a vortex,
or sacred site and the individual combine to raise the energy.
Here is where the Spirit of Place works with the shaman and
materializes as a presence. Sites that align to the celestial
bodies or cosmic events are major locations and as a rule have
been designed for specific purposes. As you can well imagine
they should be honored and respected. It would be wrong and
risky to attempt other workings there.
The giants of the Earth are found
in the presences of the Spirits that dwell in certain locations.
Each Spirit of Place awakens when the location is visited and
by summoning the energy there it is literally like knocking
at its door. This energy then swells to immense proportions
as it raises itself up and the shaman would say: "the slumbering
giant has stirred from its dreams". Wielding the energy
is to wield that actions of such a giant. This permeation of
energy or empowerment in the respective area becomes the manifestation
of the Spirit of Place as it lives and takes action. I twill
bend to the will of the shaman when properly addressed, but
it will not be bound by any restraints.
Awakening the Spirit of Place creates
a tangible unified experience. These actions have an immediate
effect upon the environment and the wisdom used is measured
to form a resonance that is in harmony with the universe. Here
actions are designed for healing, seeking enlightenment, and
spiritual growth. Since the Leys are made up of energy and the
culture of the areas they cross, they contain a memory of the
land--what it has seen, heard, known or experienced. They contain
a memory of the nature of the Earth itself. Each Spirit of Place
possesses the key to great wisdom that can be tapped. Each site
has its gifts to share, and will determine what is to be extended
to those who visit.
The Spirit of Place is able to read
the individual when they arrive. It will watch as the sacred
space is prepared. It will observe the centering and how the
land is treated. It will know the purpose for which the shaman
or individual has come and will reveal only what is worthy of
being known. The limits and restrictions faced are those of
the individual...the person's spiritual nature determines how
little or how much enlightenment will be given.
If you seek initiation you will
be initiated. If you seek wisdom it will be found. If you seek
knowledge it will be granted. If you seek enlightenment your
path will be illuminated. All will be in direct proportion to
what you are willing to do once it is yours. Intent to serve
the betterment of yourself and All Our Relations opens a vast
treasure-trove. The shaman knowns through the intensity of the
work when it calls for various processes to be applied. Sometimes
alone and at others in conjunction with one and other, the use
of musical instruments, tools, dance, prayer, and herbs play
important roles. The shaman is schooled in the use of drugs
and knows the deadly potential of the ingestion of such plants.
I do NOT recommend the use of drugs--they are NOT necessary.
The importance of location is in
direct relation to the process of initiation, healing, and other
workings. Medicine Wheels, caves, stone circles, megaliths,
waterfalls, pools, sacred sites of all configurations are used
for the effects they produce. Being well aware of the energies
present in these locations allows them to be utilized to their
fullest potential. In time you will come to recognize the effects
that can be achieved from different locales. It all begins with
a little research and becoming used to what is known to exist
at various sites. Then, when you come upon one you are familiar
with you will be able to recognize the energies at work there.
Energy must be handled with great
respect and honored for what it is. Its flow of Power is great,
much like that of the raw elements themselves. This power is
borrowed and never to be claimed wholly for it belongs to all
of life and to claim it would bring a backlash you do not want
to experience. When you think of the raw elements in their passive
mode it is easy to visualize a gentle breeze, a candle flame,
a trickling stream, or a grassy meadow. There is so much more
to them than just that. Just as a gentle breeze becomes the
force of a hurricane; a candle flame becomes a raging inferno;
a lazy river becomes a torrential flood; and the solid earth
rises up to quake, so the energy forces of the Web have a passive
and aggressive nature. It is always wise to begin working with
it gradually rather than jumping into a situation that you do
not wholly understand.
Experience will tach you how to
summon and direct the energy. Always, always remember to give
something back in toke of the borrowing. The most practical
way to work with this energy is to draw it into you from the
Earth, and then send it back. You can do this by standing with
your feet apart at shoulder width, placing your arms down at
your sides, and your palms parallel to the Earth. Enter a state
of meditation, center yourself, and as you draw up the energy
raise your hands until they are palms up over your head and
the energy has reached the crown area. Then reverse the process
thinking of a healing love being returned to the Earth. This
should be practiced several times before proceeding to more
advanced work. Do it with each of the elements of Air, Fire,
Water, and Earth. Pass the energy in and out of specific objects,
plants, and locations. Eventually you will do this with the
Spirit as well and learn to draw upon the power in the process
of projection.
All matter is energy. Its flow is
a continual cycle of the charging (drawing) and discharging
(projection) of its forces. When you are able to summon and
return the flow of each element you should move to the next
step which is that of Spirit; drawing and passing the energy
of the universe to and from you. These techniques can then be
applied at a vortex site and the effects become greatly enhanced.
The harmonious blend of the elements and Spirit are what is
sought through ritual processes. NEVER DRAW POWER FROM OTHERS
AND DEPLETE THEIR SUPPLY. If you feel you need more energy for
yourself, simply draw from the bottomless well of the universe.
It is there to be shared by all.
Ionization is found in caves, waterfalls,
and on mountaintops. The air is charged by the atmosphere and
glows can be seen radiating from certain locations indicating
a strong concentrated force. Caves often attract lightning due
to their concentrations that are expandable by heat. They can
appear to smoke or steam and the lightning will follow along
that path. For this reason they are better used in the evening
or early morning hours. Caves are also known to bring about
or greatly enhance altered states by those who enter to sleep
or take on trance states within their boundaries. Granite holds
energy quite well and there is usually a location at each site
where it is found that it is conducive to being a focus of the
energies present there.
Energy concentrations can be found
in boulders, monoliths or stones at certain sites. Placing the
spine or forehead upon the source will often bring about spontaneous
altered states of consciousness. In the places of fire negative
ions are infused into the atmosphere and by staring transfixed
into the flames and following their rhythms varying states of
trance are frequently and quite easily induced.
Ley Lines and Vortexes
Part Ten © Cinnamon
Moon
We see the physical realm as existing
in linear time counting everything from seconds to hours and
from days to centuries. The solar systems exist in cycles of
time where we measure orbits and distances that we map in light-years.
Otherworld dimensions are not so restrained; they are free of
clocks, measurements, and time-tables. There, past, present
and future merge with the energies of the universe and all becomes
as one. Spiritually, the shamanic practitioner escapes the physical
boundaries and is able, through projection of the inner spirit,
to journey backward, forward, or anywhere in the present at
the speed of thought. It is accomplished simply by wiling it.
The philosophy of the Medicine Path does not recognize linear
time; this concept is hard to grasp for those outside Native
American cultures. It is a philosophy that espouses the Now
is what matters and hourly time has not value. It marks life
by the changing seasons or the rise and fall of Moon or Sun.
Seeing time as the spinning Wheel of the Year, there is nothing
more. In this way the practitioner dwells within the spirit
of the experience alone. For the shaman there is no late or
early, things just happen the way they are supposed to happen.
The past becomes the present since memories exist in the mind
and can be summoned to the Now. The
future waits.
Throughout the years the knowledge
of the existence of Otherworlds has been reserved for the adepts
(the shamanic and religious leaders as well as the practitioners
of magical, occult, and forbidden arts). Word trickled down
and fell into the hands of those of the bardic arts who encrypted
truths in legends and myths where their secrets were safe. The
average person gave them over to lost tales, to superstition,
to Faerie. Those wise enough to see the truths were able to
decode them and put them into practice. It takes a great deal
of patience to sort through the colorings and symbols to glean
even an ounce of truth. So well were they interwoven that the
practice of decoding became a renowned art form. Clues not only
exist in the myths, but in the markings of landscapes that surround
them. Thus, when the vortexes are visited, when their myths
are told, the Spirit of Place is given form, takes on an identity,
and comes to life.
Views of Otherworlds have survived
the ages simply because the shamans and mystics of the world
have been there. They have experienced the dimensions of Spirit.
They have known personally the Spirit of Place at many sacred
sites. When they return from their shamanic journeys they are
able to share with us bits and pieces that are woven into stories
and lore that can be retold. Sacred myths exist keeping alive
the knowledge of the hidden pathways and truths of the Wise
Ones.
This is a time of change and it is
not just the shaman who is going to Otherworlds. Today more
and more individuals are crossing into altered states of consciousness
that let them glimpse the dimensions. Sacred sites and energies
exist. With them come the doors long guarded and shrouded in
shadows. The time has come, for all who desire it, to experience
them. To do this you must summon your courage and explore what
you may have dared not to believe. It is a time of open-mindedness
and willingness to accept what is beyond physical reality. Space
is not the final frontier. It is the Otherworlds of the spiritual
dimensions. It is Spirit itself.
Your willingness to embrace your
spirituality within the bounds of the Medicine Wheels of the
world speaks to the new age
born of the old. What the shaman might define as the Web of
Life or Spirit World and sacred sites the New Age Movement has
labeled as Leys and vortexes. They are all the same and there
is nothing new about New Age teachings except perhaps the applications
on a global scale as a movement. These sites can be marked by
the physical eye in some cases, but it takes the spiritual third
eye (the mind's eye) to really *see* them. Everyone is able
to work with them. What matters is that they are forces that
allow you to pass through the portals to Otherworld realms,
to dimensions of higher learning. All that is required is a
strong will, purpose, and patience...and a little practice.
These realms can be entered into
with great ceremony if you are so inclined, but all you really
need is you. The vortexes exist in many places and you will
find these gateways wherever the Sacred Energies converge. In
the opening of caves, the thunder of a waterfall, on the tops
of mountains, deep within canyons, all are places where the
borders of this world meet those of the next. I have seen the
energies of the Otherworlds. I know them. They pass through
solid objects and are unheeded by mundane reality. They have
no obstacles. These energies flow of their own will for their
own purposes. They link and permeate the dimensions. They are
present always.
This energy is vast and it is there
for us to use. Altered states of consciousness may allow you
to see it. Spiritual questing may allow you to see it, or you
may simply move beyond the veil into the realms that await simply
feeling its essence. I am able to see the energy. Some might
call it a mist for it moves like a flowing fog, smooth and steady.
I see beyond the mist to the molecular structure and always
I am held in awe. It is beautiful. It takes my breath away.
The doors that open to these Otherworlds
allow you to perceive the dimensions in their many facets; from
glimpses to adventures, from whispers to enlightenment, it all
awaits. A sacred site is found at the center of the vortex where
the symbolic shamanic tree is created either physically or figuratively.
In the myths of the world this tree becomes one of knowledge,
of life, of the Kabbalah, the sacred mountain, the spiritual
center and passageway. It is through the tree that the shaman
may travel spiritually to other dimensions, into the Above,
Below, and Middle Worlds.
From out of the sacred center stream
the elemental rivers of the four quarters. They are the borders
of four distinct dimensional realms. They are the spokes of
the Medicine Wheel. The branches of the tree, or the summit
of the mountain reaches up into the dimension that rises above
us to the Sky Father, to Great Mystery. The roots stretch down
deep below, deep into the spiritual essence of the Earth Mother.
The tree trunk is the sacred center, the arrow of Spirit where
the shaman must begin the journey to any of these realms. So
it is that within each dimension there exists realm within realm,
for there are Medicine Wheels there as well.
The circle of the Medicine Wheel
is the Sacred Hoop of Life. It is the spirit that encompasses
the universe and Otherworlds. it has no beginning, no end, no
top, no bottom. It is all time, all space, all presence. it
is past, present, and future. The Medicine Wheel symbolizes
these Otherworlds just as the Seven Arrows of the shaman represent
the Seven Sacred Directions. This same symbolism is found in
the six-sided crystal that is held to complete the oneness,
the union of physical and spiritual. The Medicine Wheel is the
Circle of Life. it is the central source where the energies
meet and make passage possible where all flow begins and ends
in the Now.
You need not pass through a portal
to experience the change. Transformation can result from time
spent at a site, through vision quests, dreams, or events that
take place in your life. Chance encounters and periods of deja'
vu are often glimpses into Otherworlds. The expansion of consciousness
can take you up into the heavens or deep within the bowels of
the Earth. The levels of the dimensions vary and interweave
with one and other at the fringes. Your own consciousness resides
within yourself and thus that is where you must begin. Your
imaging forms will allow you to enter through the dimensional
doors in cooperation with the Sacred Energy, vortex sites, or
in your own Medicine Wheel. The energy of the Leys enhances
your work and simplifies your entry endeavors.
The Otherworlds are inhabited by
elemental spirits and those of human ancestors. They vibrate
at a different rate than the physical world and can co-exist
with the material realm without interfering in it. This co-existence
allows the entities to become teachers, protectors, and allies
for humanity. They cover a broad spectrum of primal forces and
advanced beings in a blend of presence and energy that is often
luminous and sometimes of shadow.
The shamanic cultures have their
allies; the Celts have their Faeries; the British their Little
People; the churches their angels. Every country has its own
terminology for what the entities should be called. The truth
of the matter is that they are spirits and will take the form
that most conforms to your own personal belief system since
that is how you will best accept them. They are made up of energy
and their form is of light. They are capable of transformation,
or shapeshifting when they desire to appear before you to communicate.
They frequently understand you better than you do yourself and
will become your greatest teachers if your intent is pure.
It will be impossible to hide the
fact if you go to them selfishly seeking power for its own sake.
They can see into the shadows of your inner spirit and will
assist you in your endeavors if your purpose is true. What these
entities are looking for is the seeker that is searching for
spiritual growth, healing, enlightenment, to help humanity,
or to improve the conditions of the Earth. These spirits will
not do the work for you, but they will work with you. They are
of high integrity and know that only by doing for yourself can
you truly grow.
You must go to them in polite humility,
in honor, in respect of their wisdom. You must honor their realms
and customs. To do anything less is to be intrusive and give
cause for them to really teach you a lesson--one you would most
certainly rather not encounter. It is best you go prepared and
willing to use the manners your grandmothers taught you. Be
polite and use your common sense. Those who go thinking they
can command the power and entities of the Otherworlds will come
to learn soon enough that they will suffer for their arrogance.
This is not a game. It is sacred wisdom and you must be willing
to give of yourself to learn.
There are pitfalls that come as
temptations to wield your gifts selfishly. This must never be
done. If you want to become a healer, develop your psychic skills,
or learn their mysteries for the betterment of humanity, these
entities will be most gracious. You will be granted visions,
dreams, teachings, sessions of counsel, and many things...but
you must earn the right. You are a stranger knocking upon the
door. How will you enter? What will you say? What impression
will you give? What is your purpose? They will want to know
and if you cannot answer then you have
no right being there. If you carry shadows in your heart as
most of us do, you must be willing to surrender them in all
honesty. You must be willing to sacrifice something in exchange
for these gifts or perform a service in some positive way.
The secret is to yield up your negative
habits graciously, for it is seen as an acceptable exchange
and a sign of your evolving spirit. Take the time beforehand
to prepare yourself for the journey you wish to make. Ask yourself
the reason as to why you want to go and what you are willing
to do in exchange. It does not take much. The price is never
higher than it should be. All you must do is rid yourself of
any negativity. Like attracts like, and you do want to attract
the most positive entities you can. You must answer these questions
for yourself, and unless you are willing to do these things
you will be disappointed.
To enter the Otherworlds with negative
baggage will only set the stage for your own suffrage. The forces
and entities that dwell there will shed light upon any of your
shortcomings. There are trials enough in their learning processes
that test courage, honor, faith, and skills. If you do not go
with the purest of intent the magnification will demand a definite
change of attitude and you may not like your reflection. Do
not fool yourself into thinking otherwise. This is why the shaman
goes through purification rites.
Whatever you wish to hide deepest
in your heart will be made to confront you here. It mirrors
and enhances both your positive and negative attributes. It
is where your demons dwell--though you are their creator. Otherworlds
draw form from your mind since they are of spiritual essence.
Your fears will master you there if you do not confront them
head-on first. You must acknowledge them and respond to them
with a desire to release or absolve yourself from their presence.
You must neutralize fear in order to function. Identify the
source and confront it or it will become your obstacle to success.
Confronting fear builds strength
each time you do it. Simply refuse to give it power over you.
It cannot harm you unless you allow it to do so. Learn to trust
your instincts and proceed first to heal yourself. When you
have far you can call upon your Guides to accompany you. They
will come. The ability to laugh at the folly you have created
for yourself is another asset. Laugher dispels fear and fear
is simply false evidence appearing real. You must learn to face
them with the strength you find within yourself--a strength
you may not yet have discovered, but it is there.
Your fears, the entities, and forces
will challenge you. Expect this and return the challenge standing
your ground. That is expected of you. This does not mean you
should go there in arrogance. Retain your sense of integrity
and humor since it is understood in other dimensions just as
it is here. Do take care not to bring about insults when you
use it, but learn to see the humor in the lessons of life. When
you offer up your negative baggage as a sacrificed part of yourself
the Spirit Worlds will then fill that space with more productive
and precious gifts.
Any true seeker must undergo initiation,
a process that brings with it wisdom. This wisdom must undergo
a process of growth. This comes as you learn to apply it. Through
the initiation the seeker discovers the truths about the self.
The process is frequently one of trial and error through quests
and transformations. Initiation is the step that repeats itself
at each stage of development. It will come as shamanic Otherworld
journeys are pursued and you become who you truly are.
Do not fear the entities for they
are honorable. They lack the human emotions yet maintain very
strong ideal. They are telepathic and communication with them
will come as exchanged thoughts. They are very protective of
their realms and rightfully so. These beings glow with inner
light as to the worlds in which they dwell. They do not emerge
from your imagination, but merge into images within your consciousness.
They are simply shapeshifters in ways that serve to communicate
along the lines your mind is best able to perceive and accept
them--like telepathic thoughts of form. They are not here to
serve your will and theirs is even stronger I assure you. They
are, however, here to serve Spirit and in doing that to serve
your needs.
Strive to find harmony and balance
in the relationships you develop with them as you progress..
They will clarify any issue you ask them to if you are uncertain
of something. If you need to meet with another entity who better
understands your needs express this tactfully and one will come.
Some entities will remain with you always while others will
come and go. Of those that remain there are many who would call
them your guardian angels. I prefer to see them as Spirit Guides
and teachers.
In some cases individuals choose
to break ties with these entities and do so in various ways.
Iron and steel are frequently worn; I suspect because it repels
them due to the metal interfacing with their personal energy
vibrations stirring their essences in negative ways. It is also
possible to make a cutting motion with your hand in front of
your solar plexus area. Speaking of a co-walker from the Otherworld
in any form of public bragging will often cause an abrupt parting
of the ways; although you can talk of them with others who are
working along these lines themselves. Just make certain that
what you say is worthy of your chosen words.
These entities are real. They possess
real powers. They also expect never to be taken for granted.
Ask questions anytime you are given advice or tutoring from
Otherworld beings. Then expect an answer. It is a custom in
these realms to behave this way as trust must be earned on both
sides. You can be certain they will always challenge you. In
this respect equal rights exist here. When I speak of a challenge
put forth by you what I am talking about is to question the
entities as you would a teacher in school. Ask for credentials
without being intrusive or too personal. Ask to be told the
concepts behind what is being taught. Examine everything and
then decide for yourself if you wish to make use of it. The
opportunity is yours and you have the right to wield it; just
be certain that you do so honorably.
When the shaman speaks of the Sky
Father (Spirit) and the Star People, it is invariably in the
context of Medicine teachings. They relate to the Above World
and the fact that our purpose here is to learn so that when
the time comes for the inner spirit to leave the body behind
permanently it will have evolved. In order for this to happen
a conscious awareness must exist and lead to actions that will
bring about spiritual enlightenment and growth during the physical
lifespan. The mention of angels is notable here since that is
the term the Church uses for beings of this realm. They are
the guides of enlightenment, the sages of spiritual growth,
and the intelligences that we all look to at one time or another
in our lives.
The Star People are part of the
vast array of spirit beings that become teachers, guides, allies,
and co-walkers. If you need a travel guide in the Otherworlds
they will guide you. If you are looking for
companionship they will accompany you. If you are in danger
they will protect you. If you must face your fears they will
teach you how. Once you open the channels they will come to
you when you have need of them. They bring messages and the
more you explore the more you will learn of them. These Otherworld
beings cannot be denied once you have had an encounter.
The entities of the Below world have
form and are of a variety of functional means. Their identities
are set and do not undergo change. They are the Ancestors and
Ancient Ones who will grant information and help you as you
struggle to find your spiritual self. These allies work on a
spiritual level with you as respected guide and often reveal
many mysteries in the process. It is in the Below World that
you can look far back into the past and discover much about
yourself.
The allies of the Above and Below
Worlds are all teachers in one form or another. The teachings
you receive in Otherworld settings come from spiritual masters.
They expect you to raise questions, not with impudence, but
with sincerity. You do have the right to ask for patience on
their part or for another to take their place if they appear
too difficult to work with at any point. Simply thank them for
the courtesy they have shown you and attempting to instruct
you. Explain honestly that you feel you would be better served
by another instructor. These entities or beings are not tied
to human emotions and their feelings will not be hurt by your
request.
They are quite capable of empathizing
with, and intelligently understanding, your needs. When you
have learned all you can from a specific teacher they will often
come to be replaced by another; though it is possible to request
them to remain with you as a mentor. These beings are spiritual
entities but are by no means the only ones. All are spirits
of other dimensions and the shaman does not differentiate them
from beings of the physical realm. They can be powerful friends
and terrible enemies. Their realms of dimension are intensified,
amplified and critically real. They dwell in a primal land and
to visit such a place is to be changed.
These realms are free of corruption
and religion as they are of nature and one with the universe.
Their gifts will free you of your burdens, but only through
the reflections of the self that must be faced once you are
there. To be pure in heart and honest is required of all who
become affiliated with them. Any less and they will turn away
from you. The practitioner of the Medicine Path is able to see
them in a state of trance or as a spiritual messenger. Their
appearance is always significant no matter what medium they
choose to reveal themselves.
If they appear in a dream as an
animal the spiritual aspects are to be taken into account in
the process of interpretation. The animal may even speak telepathically
to you. The same applies if they present themselves in other
unusual circumstances or in a physical environmental setting.
As to what you may learn, well, that is up to you. Ancient knowledge
in all fields of study is available to be explored for application
in today's society. You may request a specific subject to be
taught and the appropriate teacher will appear, one who is quite
capable of understanding and addressing your thinking processes.
They can also work with you through the Dream Lodge; so always
keep a notebook and pen by your bed. Any issues you struggle
to comprehend can either be clarified through questions at your
next meeting or will be presented to you again when you have
advanced further. You will generally be shown only that which
you are capable of understanding. This is why so many times
in life we hear, or see, the same thing over and over and one
day it suddenly strikes us with its truth. We may have experienced
it a hundred times, but that
one moment it strikes home.
The elements of Air, Fire, Water,
and Earth are strong when working within the Medicine Wheel.
Here the entities of each domain can be found to present specific
functions and characteristics. Those of the East and Air will
teach perception, communication, focus, illumination, and intellectual
matters. Those of the South and Fire will teach sensation, courage,
and faith; trust, strength, protection and passion. Those of
the West and Water will teach intuition, healing, transformation,
inner wisdom, and love. Those of the North and Earth will teach
connection, structure, sustenance, abundance and secrets. Surrounding
these elements is the outer rim of the eternal circle that represents
Spirit and the entities that reside here will teach transcendence
to Otherworlds and levels of understanding. The Medicine Wheel
is an extension of the vortex or sacred site as its energy is
ever spiraling beyond the borderlines of dimension and into
Spirit.
These entities can participate in
Otherworld initiations you may elect to undergo. This is strictly
your choice and you need not feel the least bit of pressure
to accept any offers presented to you. An initiation simply
means you are being prepared for deeper studies. It is not a
commitment or pact to which you are bound to follow some religious
path or dogma. It is a testing of your knowledge and skills
and one you can elect to accept or refuse. If you feel you need
an explanation, simply express that need politely. Any instructions
you receive in the Spirit Worlds come as gifts and you should
always express your gratitude.
There are archetypal entities as
well. These are energy forms of mythical personages from the
collective mind of the universe. By this I mean that some of
these entities maintain a persona that has been formed by the
belief systems of the world that are relative to one and other.
Working with them will often bring about dramatic changes that
spill over into your physical life. The studies undertaken in
this area are very revealing on both a conscious and subconscious
level. As real time passes and you have experienced these encounters
over a period of months you will find your reflections to show
that this is true. What has taken place will make these transitions
obvious to you if they are not already. That is why journal
work is so important. It allows you to track your progress.
Archetypes are real energy forms
and can have strong effects on your progress. Do not let yourself
become trapped by thinking they are figments of your imagination.
They have much to teach you and are often those identities from
legends who are said to return again in the future. They can
be the personages of myths that repeat themselves throughout
the centuries in the manner of Arthurian tales and those of
the Little People. Such myths do not just belong to the Celtic
regions and are found throughout the cultures of the world.
They present grand lands, adventures, and dramas that unfold
for you. Alliances are made under conditions that are always
attended to strictly. Such encounters invariably bring about
powerful associations to the land in one way or another.
Use common sense and manners with
these entities. You attract what you project. Spiritual entities
and allies harmonize with you and you will draw those of a like
mind. Be certain you exercise only the highest integrity. If
by chance you do draw an entity that makes you feel the least
bit uncomfortable simply visualize the White Light of Spirit
and send them away. The purity of the light repels all negative
energies. This type of experience is avoided by focusing on
your highest ethical levels in an honest effort to become enlightened
with spiritual truths and growth. To seek ancient wisdoms, heal
past mistakes, learn from the Ancestors, angels, and spirits
all these goals create desire in a proper mode to be conducive
to your betterment. The allies you find when you present your
impeccable best will be protective and guide you in areas that
offer the most benefit to you. Remain positive at all times
as frustration only sets you back and opens the door to failure.
You are the only one who can disappoint yourself and this is
not necessary. Focusing instead on taking things one step at
a time will allow you to see that you have begun running (or
shamanically flying) soon enough.
After you have gained some experience
you can make arrangements to meet with others in other dimensions.
This is how the shaman trains an apprentice. Again, the writings
of Carlos Castaneda go into great detail about such experiences
of you are looking for reference material in this area. You
must visualize the individual you want to meet and they must
be willing to come beforehand. It is a summoning or accompaniment
that takes place. Remember to keep your journal up to date.
It is a critical part of your work. The more detail the better,
and you should always note any symbols and where they were seen,
be it on an object or alone.
Environmental experiences and entities
encountered as well as your physical and spiritual experiences
and sensations should be included. No journal is worth anything
if you do not read it periodically. they are clues to many things
you will later come to recognize and can point out areas that
need greater focus. Certain patterns will begin to emerge, important
symbols will repeat, allies will come and go, and lessons learned
will be recognized. Often you will discover that you have learned
far more than you thought you had. It is like taking notes on
an exceptional lecture, for we all too soon tend to forget the
little details and innuendoes that can often be the most important
issues. Through the exploration of these Otherworlds and alliances
with their entities you will come to know the true meaning of
spiritual growth and enlightenment.
Ley Lines and Vortexes

Shamanic practices recognize seven
basic power centers within the body. Each has a tone, color,
and location. These must be balanced along the spinal column
of the body before the energy can be properly activated to its
fullest potential. These are comparable to chakra points: the
base, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye, and crown.
Balance of these centers creates the path to Otherworlds of
Spirit. It is the rainbow of the body as each of their colors
is pure energy and aligned, attunes the body to nature and Spirit
creating a concentrated beam of focus and beacon. It takes you
beyond the radiance of the aura to the pulsating vibrancy of
Spirit.
Chanting the vowels of the power
centers is a very ancient and widespread technique of attunement.
Chanting has a vibratory connection to the energies and creates
harmony as well as awakening these centers. Visualizing the
colors along with this heightens the results. Combined the chanting
and visual effects bring about a deep inner balance. When used
alongside the process of raising the power at a sacred site
or within the Medicine Wheel, the state of oneness is rapidly
achieved and on a greater scale. (See Ley Lines and Vortexes)
These power centers of the body hold the same colors of the
rainbow, and through focusing on them the individual becomes
a rainbow of attunement. (Jamie Sams refers to this as the Whirling
Rainbow I believe).
Remember that meditation is simply
an inward reflection of an outward focus. If you wish answers
to questions you need only to ask them, reflect inwardly and
be still. Wait patiently and the answer will come. You will
hear a soft voice echo in your mind or you will have a moment
of inspiration, visualization, or enlightenment. You may project
for more depth and greater revelation. These power centers are
a study in itself and there are many books written on the subject
readily available at bookstores everywhere.
In my studies over the years I have
found that when information is presented on shamanic ritual
procedures, authors and speakers alike feel they must justify
what they are presenting to an educated audience. It appears
that because society has progressed to a generally higher intelligence
level that they believe simple concepts will not be accepted
without complicated terminology to describe each step. I feel
this has only served to cloud issues and confuse those who would
strive to understand. A simple explanation of how to proceed
goes much farther. The fact of the matter is that people want
basics so they can adapt them to their own personal belief systems
or religious paths. No one wants to be converted.
In nature the laws are simple and
they are always the same. Humanity complicates them. In the
shamanic tradition there are Seven Directions, Seven Elements,
Seven Power Centers, Seven Arrows, Seven Steps of Preparation,
and Seven Steps in the Words of Making to be followed. These
are all interrelated. They have all been discussed in various
articles up to this point but recounting them in order will
help you focus on what will follow.
Seven Directions:
East, South, West, North, Above, Middle, and Below.
Seven Elements:
Air, Fire, Water, Earth, Above World, Middle World, Below World.
Seven Power Centers:
Base, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, Crown.
Seven Arrows:
These are the directions, elements, and power centers combined.
As a side note the seventh is always the individual that is
centered amid the other six. Seven Steps of Preparation:
1) There is a ritual cleansing. This can be done by smudging
and often includes a Sweat Lodge Ceremony of purification as
well as a period of fasting.
2) The Medicine Wheel is cleansed of its negative energies.
3) Personal accessories that will be needed are cleansed and
brought into the circle.
4) The tools are brought into the Wheel and these are sacred
items that have been used only for sacred activities. Their
initial preparation was a cleansing ritual to begin with and
being kept for sacred work allows them to maintain their purity.
5) Attunement to the Voice of the Land to hear what it is saying
and know thah there has been acceptance of the individual's
presence.
6) Attunement to the Spirit of Place to know there has been
acceptance and a union with Spirit.
7) Centering which can often be brought about through the use
of a focal fire where gifts of incense will rise up on the smoke
that reveals the Otherworlds.
Seven Steps in speaking the
Words of Making:
1) Selection of a location, generally at a vortex, sacred site,
or within a Medicine Wheel, however this can be anywhere you
choose.
2) Centering of mind, body, and spirit within the Sacred Hoop
or Medicine Wheel. This can be drawn or made up of stones. It
is a visual sacred space. it includes acknowledging the Seven
Directions and elements before proceeding.
3) Meditation and focus that disassociates the physical realm
from the purpose at hand. This can include chanting, trance,
dancing, drumming, etc. to seek the state of oneness with the
universe and Spirit.
4) Visualization to open the doors to Otherworlds. This is focusing
on the spiritual landscapes, allies and Guides that are being
sought through additional attunement.
5) Projection of the spirit into other dimensions or this one.
This is the process of opening and releasing the spirit to join
the spiritual realms and entities. It is the ultimate oneness
that can be experienced while you inhabit your physical body
in this lifetime.
6) The experience of an altered state of consciousness that
brings on growth, transformation, healing, or change. This includes
work on the various levels of the dimensions or Otherworlds.
7) Return to the physical consciousness and the physical realm.
This includes reflection and interpretation of what has occurred
after the grounding session.
With all in order the process may
begin. An important reminder is called for regarding shamanic
tools. The symbolism and energy represented with each shamanic
object makes a statement. All that each item represents and
encompasses is well known to the shaman and in handling them
these things are silently speaking to the practitioner. Through
ritual use the shaman imbues the objects with deep symbolic
meaning and energy or power is wielded through them. A bond
is formed.
When used ritually, the objects
become encoded with the intent of the shaman; thus the power,
as it functions to serve the direction of the shamanic energies,
is aimed toward achieving a specific result. The objects themselves
do not hold energy, but channel it and in that they are seen
as holding power. They are activated through use and handling.
In this way all ritual objects are perceived as sacred. Many
will contain a resident spirit that works with them and in that
sense there is power present.
As you learn to work with your spirituality
it is best to always follow one practice method until it is
well understood. Once the concepts are recognized and well known
it is very easy to see where other customs and adaptations by
various other systems or religions apply. It is then that any
method that feels comfortable to you can be used to achieve
your goals. If you jump around in the beginning it will only
serve to confuse and frustrate you. If after several attempts
with the method presented here you find you are still unsuccessful,
I would suggest making some changes or perhaps trying another
technique that is more appealing to your nature.
In the shamanic tradition there
is very little that can be termed offensive to anyone. I find
that the techniques it provides do bring about the swiftest
results; for myself, and those who have come to me to learn.
If after working with the Sacred Hoop of the Medicine Wheel
you have not experienced at least a moderate transformation,
you will most likely find that results will slip into your night
dreams and daily life. These results can range from subtle to
dramatic. The Spirit Worlds and the entities there are cognizant
of you even if you pay them no heed. It is there purpose to
bring you closer to Spirit.
Any call put forth by an individual
is heard, and will receive a response in some way. The manner
in which it is sent is generally that which is best understood
by you, but you must remain open to receive it. It serves no
purpose to ask for assistance and then forget about it. What
comes is not the solution itself, but the answer to what *you*
must do to achieve that solution. Your *light switch* must always
remain on in order to be aware of the answers and transformations
that are offered to you. Giving up negative habits and old ways
that are no longer serving a purpose in your life will make
way for the new to enter.
I would like to share some personal
things with you at this point. Years ago, when I was first initiated
into the Below World the vision that emerged for me was one
of a subterranean temple. Well-worn stone steps descended deep
into the temple and the passage was lit by flaming torches.
The walls were hewn of smooth grey stone, and the ceiling above
me arched. Near the bottom of the stairs there was a niche carved
into the wall and a vase of beautiful multi-colored flowers
was set within it. It was a very welcome feeling I experienced
as I passed by the vase and the aroma fo the flowers was remarkable.
I knew nothing more than a profound peace and my own curiosity
at this point. I had not fear and when I reached the bottom
a landing opened into a hallway with two doors to either side
of an alcove. These doors were both open wide, made of wood
and arched at their tops. In the alcove was a podium with an
enormous book set upon it. The tome was closed, its pimpled
leather cover held tight with a metal clasp and runes were carved
deep upon its face. A purple sash trimmed in gold tassels was
draped over it.
I went to the alcove, placed the
sash around my neck and ran my fingers over the cover. The latch
sprang open in silence and I opened the book. it contained secrets
and wisdoms for which I had been searching. I knew the door
to my left was the door of receiving, just as the left hand
is; and the door to my right was the door of sending, just as
the right hand is. These I did not immediately enter for it
was the book I had come to read and I did this through the eyes
of my inner spirit. This experience was filled with symbology
that meant many things to me. I was given this entrance long
ago and now I utilize it whenever I need to go to the Below
World.
A similar experience may happen
for you and I felt it was well worth my mentioning it here.
There are many universal symbols that can be interpreted by
others to mean a variety of things, but they were my symbols
and my interpretation of them was persona. I have not found
it to be wrong.
When I was introduced to the Above
World, I was just about to fall asleep for the night when brilliant
flashes of white lightning forced me to blink even though my
eyes were closed. They seemed to be driving me into myself,
into the darkness of my inner being. I realized that I must
first go within to project out with my spirit and let the flashes
guide me. I emerged into the universe lit by stars and my spirit
expanded up and outward into it. I floated freely and experienced
the flight of oneness that is often called the shamanic journey
or out-of-body flight.
Finding the Middle World open to
me seemed to merge naturally. I had only to think of where I
wanted to go and I was there. If I wanted to be on the other
side of a wall I simply willed it and I was there. Doors did
not stop me. If I wanted to look through a wall I could do that
too, my desire created the transparency. I found that if I was
looking for someone and the room went dark it meant that they
were not there. The point is that in any of these realms, thought
can take you where you wish to go and thought can return you.
It happens just that simply and just that fast.
When you are ready to return to
your physical body you need only to think of it and gently arrive.
To return to your body there are many processes that you may
use, but be as gentle on yourself as you can be. Sometimes when
you are inexperienced and feel a need to hurry back (perhaps
something has startled you for some reason) it creates within
your will a sense of urgency. This can be a very unpleasant
return as you will snap back to your physical reality and it
can be quite a jolt to the body when it happens. If you are
aware of this it will make the transition easier by returning
smoothly.
I have shared these things with
you in the hope that you will see the variety of ways in which
I was introduced to the Otherworlds. They came as dreams, as
states of altered consciousness, and willing my inner spirit
to project to a specific location. As I worked with these processes
I found that I was able to do more and more with them each time.
I discovered that just before I was about to project that I
could see my environment through closed eyes in as much detail
as I could had they been open. I learned that this was the vision
of the Third Eye taking hold.
I also found that multi-colored lights
frequently appeared as miniscule points floating in the air
and that these were the lifting of the veil to the Otherworlds.
At times a silver grey cloud appears to pass through the room
or space I am working in and this, too, is a lifting of the
veil. Frequently the cloud will follow or precede the hovering
specks of luminous colors. These methods of recognition are
my own; they were shown to me because I had asked for a path
and was given one. Some of these things, like the lights, flashes,
and mist are quite common and you may or may not experience
them yourself.
You will discover your own path and
what works for you; you will learn to interpret your own symbols,
to function within your spirit body and much more. You can do
these same things in your own ways and discover your own answers.
It will not happen if you are not open at all times with your
light switch on continually.
The Sacred Energy lines and the
vortexes channel these energies between the dimensions as well
as between minds and spirits. They channel information that
can be gleaned from the universe and Spirit as well as the entities
that serve them. Vortexes are wonderful places to chant and
pray when you need to talk to Spirit, and to meditate when you
need to listen so answers may be received. If you are in tune
with these energies you will find the sites will open to you
and you will feel as if you are being called to them.
You will be both physically and
spiritually affected by this energy as your heightened awareness
allows your consciousness to expand to wonderful new horizons.
Things will become clear instantaneously. Books can provide
only so much information. From that point it is up to you to
go out and apply that knowledge.
You need to virtually experience what is being written about
for yourself. In this case, the truth could be no clearer. You
must experience the energy of the Leys. Remember to respect
the sites and do not disturb any ruins you may come across in
the process. If you find items there leave them alone; they
will be a part of the site, belong to a shaman, or be tokens
left by others. You need to respect these facts. Take nothing
with you when you leave and leave no trash behind you.
If when you arrive at a site you
are unsure what to do next you can always meditate on the colors
of the body's power centers. You can seek out the energy and
the Spirit of Place. You can center yourself and open to the
message that is awaiting you. This practice will serve to open
these channels for you. Remember that dreams are often gifts
and channels to the Spirit Worlds when you experience them through
the sanctity of the Spirit. Thoughts are things and can bring
about movement and activity in these situations. You must maintain
a sense of control there and not simply go barreling through
them. Receive dreams or visions openly yet question what their
meaning is and its validity to your life.
When the energy of a site penetrates
your physical body you may feel a buoyancy or sense of defying
gravity to some extent. This is quite normal. You can allow
this sensation to lead you forward but you must remember when
you have finished to ground the energy. Taking it with you will
only serve to overdose your system and create disorientation.
It is much better to return it. You will usually be left with
a sense of invigoration anyway.
With this in mind, the Leys and
vortexes await you with great promise and adventure. Go to them
as a seeker and yield up that which you no longer desire to
be a burden. Transformations will take place in subtle to profound
ways and you must make room for them to enter your life. Remember
to send healing energy and love to Mother Earth as you release
your negative energies when you arrive and ground yourself before
you go.
After you have experienced the energies
of the Leys and vortexes a few times you will begin to recognize
the sensations present when you arrive at a new site. You will
know how to proceed and what type of workings you may undertake
there. These are what the shaman would term reading a site.
It is the way the Voice of the Land speaks to you. It is the
presence felt as the Spirit of Place makes itself known to you.
It is the transformation into a life where spirituality and
the physical become united in a oneness and a way of life. It
is also up to you just how far you wish to pursue this pathway.
Note: Before discussing various
specific sites with you in articles that follow this, I will
be adding one that discusses the quickening of Sacred Energy.
It will define what sensory inputs you might encounter and what
you can look for.

Activation of your inner spirit
is often referred to as the quickening and there are three main
processes that you will undergo as you have this experience.
The three quickenings are: mental, physical, and spiritual.
The way in which you react to the experience will depend entirely
upon those aspects of yourself that are established to this
point. The information you have read will serve to help you
form your opinions. The belief system you have accepted will
outline what you are willing to acknowledge as truth. The experiences
you have known will form your world view and serve either to
help or hinder you as you undergo this transformation. The senses
you are attuned to will speak to you along with your intuition
if you know how to listen to them.
It is for you to understand and
accept this on a logical basis before you have the experience
making the transition much easier. It is very difficult to put
into words what you can expect to happen since there are so
many individual variances that come into play. Everyone reacts
somewhat differently to any given situation. Furthermore it
is a sensuous and spiritual experience that will leave a residue
of various physical effects. It is the experience itself that
speaks and that voice is muted for the most part. My attempt
to prepare you from this point on will be a very humble one.
There are three separate stages
of quickening that you will undergo as you develop your skills.
The first is the awakening of the senses when they are aroused
and being to grow stronger. They seem to come to life from a
dormant state although you would previously have sworn that
they were quite keen. They suddenly become acute, each one telling
you volumes of information.
At this point you are more aware
than you have ever been. It is a birthing process, an initiation
into what awaits. You process the information received with
incredible speed and agility. It seems as if you understand
it all with great clarity not needing to question it. Initially
this is only partially true since questions are going to arise
as you grow in your abilities and you will continue to ask them.
The difference here tends to
be that you are able to absorb and retain the answers on an
intuitive level and finding the right words to express them
will be the problem. This stems from a new perception you gain
and the adjustment to it.
The second stage is the awakening
of your inner spirit. This will be a feeling of rebirth. Almost
spontaneously the spirit is stimulated. It is excited at the
anticipation of being recognized and becomes animated. This
awareness of its existence beyond the form of a simple concept
or belief steps into the arena of true knowing. You are aware
of its presence and soon discover that it is this spirit within
that is the true you. All philosophies seem trivial when you
realize that it has been there all along and the provocative
excitement of this newfound reality becomes intoxicating.
Your thoughts seem to leap and hasten
towards all types of possibilities because your logical mind
has been shocked by this information as it surfaces. The mind
itself will struggle with it initially and must find a way to
assimilate it into the mundane world in which it has grown to
find itself so comfortable. This is easier for some individuals
that it is for others and understandably so since we are all
conditioned by the lives we have led up to this point. the mind
begins to grow accustomed to this new reality with each new
experience and it finds it is able to accept these facts as
truths through that repetition. If you believe that all this
is possible to begin with you are that much better for it.
The third stage is the projection
of the spirit within and that is another exciting and deeply
moving experience that leaves
a lasting impression. It should not, however, be undertaken
lightly and there are a few basic pieces of information that
I feel need to be addressed. If you have a place in the physical
realm to visit through the shamanic journey it is best to begin
your experimentation there first. Go where you wish but do not
intrude or spy on others if you do not want it done to you.
I find if I am looking for someone
in a building and the rooms are dark or go dark on me that it
means they are not present. I then concentrate on their face
and usually end up wherever they happen to be. I just see them
as being here or there. You can tell someone beforehand that
you plan to try this experiment at a certain time, go through
your process and check with them later. If they are sensitive
enough they may have caught a glimpse of you or at least felt
your spiritual presence.
When my daughter was about two years
old we were separated for a time while moving to a new home.
She would come to me daily in a spiritual form. I could see
her passing through the closed door and I could see through
her. All I was able to do was smile and wave and then she would
go. This was always followed by my telephoning her to say I
loved her and that we would be together again very soon. She
would appear again the next day as the incident repeated itself.
Now she was certainly too young to realize what she was doing,
but I did. An adult would comprehend the process much better
and it is often a good way to see how your skills are developing
and of assessing your progress.
it is amazing what talents children
tend to portray and the adults in their lives shun such activity.
They tell these little ones that they are imagining things or
it is only pretend. In truth there may be some of that, but
more often than not it is an actual event taking place. As the
child grows they are taught to shut down these talents, one
by one they are pushed further away until they are all dormant.
Then, if their path as an adult should take them into such studies,
the individual must learn to undo the damage and reawaken those
skills.
There are no shortcuts for the beginner
and each step must begin with one foot before the other. How
you begin is up to you, but do take care when selecting a site
and make certain that you are able to sense the energies present
there. Learn to know that you are welcome before you undertake
any work. If you are not using a vortex site, simply draw a
medicine Wheel on the ground or make one out of stones. In this
way you create your own sacred space. Some people even draw
an image of a circle in the air. The main point is to create
a sacred space and then visualize the Light of Spirit cleansing
and purifying it.
A standard mixture of sage, cedar,
and sweetgrass to cleanse the area and smudge yourself works
very well. Do be certain that you listen to the Voice of the
Land and recognize the Spirit of Place if you choose to work
at a vortex site. You are knocking at a door and must be certain
that you are welcome before you simply step inside. Take your
items with you that you need and arrange yourself comfortably.
You will not be leaving this sacred space again until you have
completed your work. Do everything you need to do beforehand
(this includes using the toilet, bringing your journal, an extra
pen just in case you need it, and acquiring some drinking water).
It is quite common to bring a blanket to sit on for comfort.
Be certain that you have all you need with you.
The energies of the Earth have existed
since the beginning of time; they contain many old memories
of ages past, of lives led, and of events that took place. There
is power in these Sacred Energy lines and locations that transcends
physical reality and reaches iout to touch the spirits of those
who are open to it. It is important to be aware of this when
traveling their pathways. It will help in understanding their
natures, for although they are similar, they each yield up differences.
To accept this you must trust your heart, instincts and intuition
as much as your mind. This is where the provocative information
that is gleaned will eventually come to rest as you draw your
conclusions after visiting these sites.
Everyone has had the subtle experience
of a first impression be it of an individual, situation, or
location. If you are comfortable you tend to think little of
it. If you are taken by the experience you tend to sense warmth
and goodness as well as favorable to enthralling perceptions
that arise. If your senses keen and you are alerted to some
risk factor you will be repelled. You may feel a hostile chill
in the air--much like walking into an argument and feeling the
ice in the room. At that point you would probably choose to
depart expediently. These are physical sensations that stir
your heart, stomach, and make the hairs stand at the back of
your neck. These sensations relate directly to the power centers
of the body. These sensations can be subtle and appear to be
nagging at you even if you are unable to quite put your finger
on it.
This does not mean that they are
not real perceptions, they are simply sensations as opposed
to visual or material confirmation that your logical mind often
demands. You need to learn to read your body's voice as well.
it is these sensations that are applied when walking a Ley or
visiting a vortex. If you stumble upon one by accident your
subconscious tends to alert your conscious mind. It does this
frequently through physical aspects that relate to each of your
senses. Consciously you seem more alert to your surroundings--there
is just something about the place that you respond to in either
a positive or negative manner. What is inviting to one person
is not always so to another and each location will have varying
effects on those who visit there.
One person may feel rejuvenated
while the hairs will stand on the neck of a companion. One may
feel the stress drain away and the other will feel they have
the heebie-jeebies and a need to get out of there. Some might
say they got the creeps or jitters, a feeling that just seems
to creep over you and cause uneasiness. Physically you may feel
warm or cold and instinctively you must learn to know and walk
with these messages to tune into the energy.
Before jumping in learn to recognize
the energy and to recognize the Spirit of Place. It is best
to begin developing your skills gradually. The stronger forces
at play can be overwhelming. Leys themselves vary in strength
as do the vortex sites, but all will serve to provide a working
knowledge of what they have to offer. Time is not a critical
issue here. The Leys and vortexes are not going anywhere. Develop
your skills.
Feelings of excitement, anxiety,
or impatience will only serve to frustrate your efforts. They
cloud impressions with false readings that can be very confusing.
It is much better to approach the issue with a calm composure.
Some anticipation is normal, but a conscious effort to read
the energy must be foremost in your mind. Eventually you will
develop a highly sensitized skill and others may begin to call
you psychic--they will not be wrong. Psychic skills are simply
highly developed senses and energy attunements, with the ability
to use them. Each encounter must begin
with harmony or it will prove less than satisfactory. If you
are at all the least bit uncomfortable, you should not stay.
If you become excited you must be alert as to why. If you feel
soothed you have come to a good beginning. In time you will
learn to utilize this information to your greatest advantage.
Use the Leys as paths of pilgrimage
for yourself as you learn to open to them. Do not be surprised
if you experience visions along the way--they happen at such
places. Many different events or experience take place at sacred
sites. The shaman sees this as normal, and records have been
left over the years on the walls of rock and hidden in caves.
They can be seen on the land itself as giant figures; like scrolls
out of time, these works step from the shadows of history to
speak to us. For archeologists it presents mysteries and hints
of what once was. To the shaman of today it is a link to their
past and speaks of what is in the present.
Much of what is found pertains to
states of trance, dimensional travel, healing and messages only
other shaman will understand. Stories take on life at these
places and if the visitor is another shaman, or one who knows
shamanic ways, they speak volumes. In certain ways these locations
speak to Jung's collective consciousness, of the universal mind
and its archetypal symbology, a power that can be tapped. In
states of trance these graphic artworks take on a deeper level
of expression. they connect the subconscious to the mind and
in union a rising consciousness that takes on a life of its
own.
In some cases these symbols act
like holograms, and in others simply the clarity of illuminated
understanding. At times they are a mixture of the two, becoming
a pictorial or silent film as the dimensional veil lifts. These
dots, zigzags, grids, meshes, etc. all depict different phases
or veils that part at such locations. On the land itself are
figures of plants, animals, humans and bio-morphs (half-human
and half-animal) indicating shamanic journeys, substances, or
shapeshifting that has been conducted there. The land figures
often contain an energy presence and in many cases have been
used for ceremonial purposes. There is a weal of them in the
United States just waiting to be explored and honored so future
generations will be able to enjoy them.
Along with the phenomena that are
reported at these locations lightning is clearly a major factor
and from what I have gathered it appears to be a part of the
recharging process of Mother Earth herself, along with the Leys
and vortexes. Throughout these locations are rocks, minerals,
ores and crystals that serve as conduits for the energy to pool,
magnify, or radiate outwardly as part of the continual flowing
process of the Earth's energies. Sites that are reputed for
displays do so at varying intervals from hourly to yearly cycles
and everything in-between. Understanding these attributes will
also help you comprehend the chain of events that takes place
when the shaman summons the energy of a sacred site.
The Spirit of Place awakens and,
as the guardian or gatekeeper, opens that portal. This in turn
links to the energy of Mother Earth and empowers the shaman
to enter other dimensions. Once there, the practitioner is standing
amid the cosmic forces of the universe. Ultimately, it is the
predominant will of The Powers That Be which prevails. This
is why, be it an individual, group, or government the negative
uses of the energy will reflect back upon the wielder. The longer
that reflection takes to occur, the greater the repercussions.
When the work done is positive, such as for healing or spiritual
growth, that work is mirrored as well and the longer it takes
the greater the reflection will be. The stronger the skills
of the individual the greater the work that can be accomplished.
I mention this because entering such locations should not be
done lightly. It is fine to be curious and visit such places,
but it should always be done in reverence and respect. These
are strong forces that enhance aspects of the individual as
well as the inner nature of that person. Surrendering to The
Powers That Be is the only way to maintain harmonious ties to
these forces. By surrender I mean remaining open to Spirit's
Will.
Before entering you need to ask
yourself what your true purpose is. Is it simple curiosity?
Are you on a spiritual quest? Do you seek enlightenment? Growth?
Healing? Why are you doing this? Are you going in reverence?
Do you plan to honor the site? Have you brought a small token
of your gratitude? Are your reasons the right ones? Meditation
at a site is always a good way to begin. Listen to the Voice
of the Land and get to know it. Place your token offering which
can be a piece of bread, tobacco, a ribbon of prayer, or a small
crystal...something of value to you. Be aware of the animals
that present themselves to you; or if you have the time to spend,
any dreams you may have. Purify yourself, and if there is a
natural spring, stream or body of water use it as part of that
cleansing. At such sites the water source is, as a rule, considered
to be sacred and beneficial.
Once a site has been visited it
is not uncommon to experience dreams for a few nights after
departure. You could have one or several and they should be
seriously interpreted. You would be surprised at what you will
unravel and many request dreams of the Spirit of Place asking
they be sent to them. It is common for these dreams to trigger
projection of the spirit that opens Otherworld doors further.
Whether you choose to follow a spiritual path in visiting these
locations is up to you. There is a mystery, a beauty, and wonder
that will walk with you along the Leys and sit with you at the
vortexes. I invite you to visit at least once and warn you that
you may find you will have a story of your own to tell...or
secrets you will treasure.
Vortexes stimulate the quickening
presence of both internal and external phenomena. Often latent
psychic skills are triggered at these times. You must learn
to work with them but the understanding that transpires is so
great that when you leave the site you will find you are able
to do so quite effectively and soon master them with confidence.
No gift comes without it needing to be polished and in that
process you gain even greater understanding of its context and
value. Each gift requires this and each gift has a price--it
must be used to benefit the self, humanity, the Earth, and All
Our Relations. You are but a keeper of a treasure that is meant
to be shared. Truth goes beyond words. to know the truth of
what I am saying you must experience it.
The shaman goes far beyond words,
beyond explanations, to the experience and learns from it. At
such times Spirit reaches out to share information. Going within
to unite with the inner spirit allows the quickening to begin
and Spirit's teachings to take place. Power can be felt and
sensed as you raise it or shift your point of awareness. Let
your spirit guide you at this point and you will instinctively
know what to do. You can visualize yourself as a channel for
the energy and direct it wherever you wish.

For beginners I recommend practicing
by sending love and healing energies into the Earth, plants,
or animals in your environment. You are then able to see the
results of your work quite readily. You'll know when it's time
to move on to other projects. You receive energy through your
hands, feet, and head as well as the base of the spine. That
is why standing or seated you are able to conduct your work.
See yourself as a channel, a hollow bone, in both directions
and allow the energy to flow back and forth between you and
Mother Earth to heal her. Become the shamanic tree with your
roots as part of that channel. It is important to ground the
energy and step out of it after every session or the energy
you channel will begin to drain you or cause physical side effects.
You can draw the energy up and down
through your power centers, the Rainbow Bridge of the shaman.
There is an old saying: "walk barefoot and feel the grass",
and there is more to it than most know. Standing barefooted
is the cleanest connection you can make. Seated on the ground
is the next best thing. Your hands are also powerful conductors
and can be placed on the ground, on trees or objects. Lying
face down on the ground will allow you to merge with the land
itself. It is the Sacred Hoop of the Medicine Wheel that must
be opened for the work and closed when it is done. Energy is
summoned to the Medicine Wheel filling the void and creating
a union with Spirit. It is here the air itself comes alive with
this energy, and it is here you must learn to work with it.
this is the quickening, the power, the link to oneness.
Control mechanisms are a part of
the daily routine of everyone. We use alarm clocks to regulate
our sleeping habits, electrical plugs and switches to control
our appliances, and keys to turn on or off the ignitions of
our automobiles. When we control something we are taking command
of a situation, directly influencing the outcome, and regulating
conditions in our lives. There is little thought put into these
actions and they are undertaken as a secondary nature to necessary
functions. This can also be seen in the functioning of the human
body.
When we want to get up and move
across a room it is our will that commands the body and our
muscles obey the order of our thoughts. We do not complicate
the process with our logical minds and think each step as it
is taken. Just as a toddler struggles to take control of the
body and learn motor skills, the beginner must take control
of their senses and consciousness learning to directly influence
or regulate them. An order must be given to the logical mind
and the will is the master we use to do this. Will is served
by controlled thoughts that in turn flip on the switches and
turn the keys that make our response mechanisms active. in this
way, with will (intent), we are able to govern our spiritual
efforts and come to know a sense of balance. The logical mind
*needs* permission to accept an anomaly or event that takes
place outside the normal range of what it perceives as reality.
Sometimes all that is needed is to think or say aloud: "I
give my-self permission to accept this situation". Sometimes
it takes a bit more effort. Eventually the commands we give
ourselves (thought or spoken) will become the keys and switches
we have been searching in the dark to find and had all the time
at our fingertips.
There is an adage that has been
around for a long time that states: "it is only mind over
matter". This is a great truth that has been overlooked
by the majority of people or at best taken for granted. You
have to set your mind firmly to cause the desired results. You
may have to exert your will a bit to start the action going
(something that often takes place when procrastination is a
companion or we think we can skip steps), but eventually what
you want to do will be done. You need to gain control. Simply
knowing the energy passes in and out of the body is not enough.
These centers must be switched on and there are a few simple
techniques that will help you do this.
Meditation turns on the mental processes,
helps to awaken the senses, and align the body's functions.
Heightened awareness turns on the awareness of the spirit within,
and the head allows it to come and go. It is the hands and feet
that allow the energies to pass in and out of the body. I have
mentioned that going barefoot helps and this is true, but how?
By exposing the soles of the feet to the soil beneath them you
allow the senses to feel and touch as the mind recognizes these
sensations. A connection is made in the same manner for the
hands. Both of these appendages need to be awakened to new sensation
through their respective power centers...in the center of the
appendage.
Years ago I learned that if I clapped
my hands together sharply three times, then rubbed them vigorously
for a minute that I could hold them just slightly apart and
feel the energy brought to the surface. It served to get their
attention. When I did this, along with my breathing and meditative
techniques, it tended to allow me to focus on my intent. It
was a mental command to my instincts to turn on and begin their
tasks. I gradually grew more sensitive to the energy I was working
with and learned rather quickly that I could sense it changing
and moving and get a feel for its energy signature. Your hands
and feet, being sensitive receptors, will help you detect Sacred
Energy, Leys, and vortexes. You can use your hands to project
or receive energy. it is in the reception of the energy that
you begin to learn to channel it and later to project for healing,
to release it for your intended work, or even release your inner
spirit through projection. Where you hold your hands or place
them will direct the energy flow whether you are taking it in
or releasing it. Alignment of the power centers, senses, and
your intent causes a balanced channel to do the work on which
you are focusing.
Speaking aloud just what your intentions
are is a powerful tool as words set things into motion. Thoughts
allow you to visualize the outcome of a goal. Combined with
the will and control of the energy you are channeling, great
strides can be made. Consciousness (the logical mind) will link
to the subconscious (your involuntary thought processes) that
in turn link to the supra-consciousness (the inner spirit and
cosmic link) and an alignment begins to take place that permits
you to accomplish many things. The process becomes intensely
powerful when the Ley Lines and vortexes are used to enhance
it and the methods mastered. It is from here that the shaman
functions on a moment by moment path, but you can experience
it as well...it is the seat of oneness.
It takes conscious effort to accomplish
this and as you progress in your efforts a gradual mastery begins
to take place. The time has come to put it into practice and
be-come. find your sacred space and enter into it to find the
oneness. If you are uncertain of the directions in the area
you visit there is nothing wrong with using a small compass.
Always work in a clockwise pattern to keep the energy flowing
positively. To undo something (like a bad habit) the work is
in a counter-clockwise direction. Remember you alone decide
what work is to be done and you alone are responsible for the
doing--and the results. Think before you act and act with the
harmony of the universe to bring balance, peace, love, and healing
into your life and the lives of those you touch.
Learn to give back to Mother Earth as well; there has been enough
taken from Her.
Charles Fasthorse, a Lakota Sioux
Medicine Man, told me: "The sacred site is a right by birth
and respect for nature related languages and old age history."
He also said: "The cottonwood, chokecherry, and willow
are all trees. They do not tell each other to stay away, you
are not like me and must grow elsewhere. They do not segregate
themselves. They grow together in the woods. They do not choose
to grow apart. Man must learn from the trees." Then he
told me: "The greatest gift is birth. The body is your
servant. The most important part of the head is the eyes. the
servant carries the master around and allows it to see. The
body is the root and the Seven Directions feed it." Through
the eyes of the shaman you have been shown ways to work with
the energies of the Earth, of the universe, of the Ley Lines
and vortexes. Take what you will and use it with impeccable
intent; you will not go wrong.
In the sections to follow there
will be information about the vortex sites and Leys throughout
the United States, but before we begin examining them there
are a few things that need to be understood. All Ley Lines and
vortex sites are *electromagnetic*, this simply means that they
are places where energies are concentrated. Of these sites there
are two basic types: electrical and magnetic, while both contain
a sampling of the other force. All vortex sites present a variety
of experiences that depend greatly upon the individual that
is visiting, but there are guidelines that will help to depict
what can be expected at each.
Electrical sites radiate energy
and heighten creative skills. They stimulate the senses, energize
the body, and sooth the emotions. They are excellent locations
for the beginner or the advanced student as they present the
higher mental aspects and heighten meditative states. They are
also good for projection. These sites heighten work directly
related to the body, open channels and allow for the experiencing
of new levels of awareness. If you want to awaken any latent
psychic talents these are the sites you will want to choose.
You will find you are able to perceive in ways that you may
not ordinarily be accustomed to using. By breathing the air
in such places the negative ions are absorbed and these are
known to assist in healings. It is at these sites that you will
gain wisdom from the intelligent source of Spirit and connect
to the universe itself. It is excellent to come to such locations
if you are feeling depleted or rundown.
Magnetic vortexes are places where
the energies are drawn away from the body. They calm angry and
raging emotions and serve to heal. The work you would do at
these sites would be deep meditation that accesses inner levels
of knowledge and the Spirit of Place. Past life regressions
occur at these locations as do encounters with allies, Spirit
Guides, and teachers. Magnetic vortexes allow the realignment
of the aura or energy field of the body and will have effects
that encompass the cellular levels. You will find that these
sites cleanse and balance the energy field that you maintain.
It is for this reason that they can be used to clear thoughts
and gain healthy perspectives. They can be used to heal the
mind, body, and spirit. they have also been known to leave persons
with a queasy stomach or headache. These energies are subtle
and continue to work after you have left the site. They are
wonderful sites to bind negative habits, health conditions,
or traits that you wish to be rid of and yield up to Spirit.
When you visit these sites make
certain that you listen to the Voice of the Land, be aware of
and acknowledge the Spirit of Place, center yourself, and acknowledge
the Seven Sacred Directions. I know I have said these things
to you before, but it is all too easy to arrive and be over-anxious
getting started than forget to take care of the formalities.
They are important aspects and speak highly of your character
in the Otherworlds. Focus, meditate, and visualize your work
and purpose for being there. If you meet with difficulty getting
past specific power centers in your body there are blockages
(see article on Blockages) you need to work on in that respective
area. Focus on cleansing and take your time, do not rush. It
may mean you will need to make a return trip.
As you gradually raise the power
you will feel it throughout your entire being. this awareness
sharpens and begins to deepen as you prepare to move forward
and gain experience. When you have absorbed the energy you can
begin the process of seeing th landscapes and points of entry
that are present in each of the dimensions. You can bring up
a vision of a door, tunnel, a stairway or use whatever makes
the most sense to you as a visual portal. As you become more
aware the veil may present itself as a result of the process.
When you have awakened your inner
spirit and are aware of the physical world having fallen away
you will begin the trance state of altered consciousness. As
the trance state takes hold it will be enhanced by your meditative
processes and visualization techniques. At this point you have
only to release your spirit with the energy to move forward
into these other dimensions. Simply will your consciousness
to be aware of your spirit body and expand it outward. To project
the spirit is to open to the experience, to embrace it, and
to swell into it. It is like an exhaled breath moving into the
moment.
It is possible you will experience
a sudden forced push out of the body that may be accompanied
by a snapping sound. You could just as easily experience a slowing
down of movement in the environment or a drifting or rushing
out of the body, as there are variations between each individual.
It is advisable to note the dimensional issues that stand out
as landmarks so you can focus on them when you want to return
another time...mapping the way as it were. Once you have projected
your spirit you may notice the presence of a Guide or ally.
If one does not appear you can call for them, but they do generally
arrive on their own if you are patient and wait. You will find
you are able to communicate with them telepathically. It is
at this point that you may experience many different emotions.
It is the initial challenge to bring them under control The
experience is awesome; there is no other way to explain it to
you. Your awareness is sharpened and honed beyond any point
you have previously known.
When going into other dimensions
you need only think of a period in history or a date (you can
even include a specific time of day or hour) and you will find
yourself transported back, or if you wish, into the future.
Visualizing calendars, clocks, newspapers, and other similar
items will prove to be helpful triggers. Do not try to alter
the past--done is done and it cannot be changed. It is a place
of resources only and may appear far differently than you expect.
Much of what we know of history has been embellished by overanxious
authors. Future events can be changed and the further away the
easier this is to do as there are fewer things set in motion
there. Certain changes you decide upon in the present can certainly
alter outcomes later. You are only able to alter YOUR future.
If you are made aware of an event
that pertains to someone you know you may only suggest they
make their changes and must leave it at that. It is not for
you to decide for them. To correct a past mistake simply be
honestly sincere that you want the correction and the let go
of the weight of it with the promise to not repeat the mistake.
Take it as a lesson well learned. Traveling in time is aided
by just about any image that can pinpoint your destination.
The imaging process is the key to unlock a door, no more.
If you are uncertain how you want
to continue you can always request a Spirit Guide. If it is
one you know simply express your desire to continue. If it is
a new ally you need to be certain to challenge and question
the entity. Even if you think you know the answers, you never
know when you are being tested in the various realms. There
are some warnings. Some entities may try to attach themselves
to you to draw from your energy. These are usually the baser
forms and they are enticed by your life source. These spirits
are pests and can be easily put aside. Simply place your hands
over your solar plexus center to block the attachment, or sweep
them before it in a cutting motion to avoid the intrusion. They
will not harm you. If you feel uncomfortable you can always
summon the Light of Spirit. Such entities are not met with when
seeking knowledge and wisdom on the higher levels, but you can
meet them when you simply go exploring. Most will leave if you
dismiss them firmly. this is another area where your intent
and purity of thoughts comes into play.
If you wish to remain more alert
to conditions in your physical environment on a daily basis,
you can just tell your subconscious to keep your senses strong
so you will be more intuitive. Pay attention to them when they
bring insight. This is a practice that you should work on anyway.
Teachers, Guides and allies can be summoned anytime to assist
you on your journeys, to interpret your experience for you,,
or as protectors. Remember that this is a seductive reality.
It touches you in new ways that reach well beyond those to which
you are accustomed. it touches the very core of your being and
is exhilarating. it is an initiatory process that deepens each
time it is undertaken.
Realms of myth can be explored as
well, and to do this is always best to listen to a retelling
on tape while you enter your meditative and visual states. You
need not project more than your mind here to understand the
universal symbology presented in the lore you wish to examine.
This is quite similar to guided imagery only it is take a bit
deeper.
To return to your physical state
simply think yourself back into your body. Become aware of it
and let your spirit gently settle itself. At this point it is
best to close your session by acknowledging the Seven Sacred
Directions and withdrawing from them by pulling your energy
back (reversing the process of entry). Ground yourself and let
any residual energy seep into Mother Earth as a gift. Thank
the Spirit of Place as well. You can open your eyes when you
are ready and of course make your journal entry immediately
if at all possible. You will have much to write about your experience.
At this point I would like to wish you well as you venture forth
on your pathway. I know that experiencing the techniques of
the shaman will bring great rewards as you walk the Leys and
visit vortexes. You will experience the energy of Mother Earth,
of the universe, and Spirit. You will come to know many new
things and all challenges will be learning experiences.
The material that follows is information
on various sites around the country combined with examples from
my own personal experiences.

Vortexes are found throughout the
country in many places and they are waiting to be explored.
I have traveled extensively visiting them and found that many
are accessible to those who want to expand their horizons.
Canyon de Chelly National Monument
in Arizona is an area of land that is sacred to the Hopi and
Navajo Nations. Here Spider Rock and Speaking Rock stand as
twin columns a thousand feet high. White House Ruins have a
sandstone cliff that shows a detail of a fish, writing, and
the shamanic five-circle circle The Navajo's tell of it being
a place where water comes out of the rock and they consider
it one of their most sacred sites for ceremonial purposes. This
site will restore balance to mind and spirit through ritual
In the slot canyons that are found
near Lake Powell outside Page, Arizona, is Antelope Canyon.
Two hundred feet below ground can be found the chambers and
corridors, sinkholes and caves that are colored like pastel
rainbows peeking out from behind dark curtains of shadow. The
ceremonies performed here are for purification. It is said to
be home to the Chindi, believed by the Indians to be spirits
confined to the Earth. They are said to be seeking revenge for
wrongs done to them when alive. They are rarely seen but frequently
heard moving around in the dark recesses. Peach Canyon is another
Navajo site. Warning: Slot canyons can be dangerous in the Spring
or during the rainy season and are subject to flash flooding.
Navajo Mountain, Arizona is about
forty miles outside Page. To the Navajo it is the home of the
Rainbow People, and an arch nearby is called the Rainbow Bridge.
It is the largest natural bridge on Earth and a place of pilgrimage
where rituals are performed to bring the much needed rains.
To pass under the bridge without the proper Songs is said to
bring about death. When the healing Song is sung over a person
the individual's spirit journeys to a holy place beyond the
sacred mountain to be healed by the spirits who live there.
Traditional chants can restore physical and spiritual well-being.
Throughout the canyon areas of Arizona
and New Mexico can be found lore of the Kakaka. These are the
Little People who stand three to four feet tall. They are spirits
that can be seen by some and are always considered to be protectors
of the people they serve. Other tribes have similar spirits
and the Kakaka are the same as the better known Kachina or Kokopelli.
Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas
is a site known for its healing waters that reach temperatures
of 140 degrees. They pump 850,000 gallons each day to springs
along a fracture zone on the western edge of the mountain. The
white quartz crystals that can be found at this site are some
of the finest the United States produces. They are used by shamans
as healing stones along with the waters from the springs. This
site is held as sacred by all Nations and those who come must
visit in peace.
Painted Rock is located on the Carrizo
Plain of the San Joaquin Valley near San Marcos Pass in southern
California. The sandstone monolith stands 150 feet in the SanYnez
Mountains. The area was inhabited by the Chumash and Yokut Indians.
The setting is ideal for tribal rituals, and it is obvously
a shamanic location. Within Painted Rock's confines are rock
paintings that relate to the heavens and this area is still
in ceremonial use. It should be respected as such. One of the
legends about this locations tells about the Dreamer, a priest
of the Feathered Serpent, who spoke to the people about love,
humble living, as well as the coming of Quetzalcoatl. The cave
at San Marcos Pass is painted with rock art that depicts trance
states and the forces of the Spirit Worlds.
Conception Point near Santa Barbara,
California is a location that is no longer accessible to the
public. It now rests on a military base there and is off limits.
I was very disappointed when I arrived with great anticipation
only to find I was unable to have the experience I had hoped
for. The location is reputed to be the Western Gate where souls
come and go upon the earth. The Chumash people are the guardians
and keepers of Humuquq, a place of refuge where the souls of
the dead may rest before making their journeys to the Afterworld.
The refuge is only attainable by a rope that leads up to the
waters of a basin. it is the basin that is the portal. There
are many tales of blue-tailed lights that are seen there and
reported to be the souls that are passing over into the Spirit
World. When a soul passes it is said that the sound of the gates
of the Spirit World can be heard closing behind it.
The California Redwood State and
National Forests are places of natural energy and well worth
mentioning. Here is a sense of great wisdom and strength. The
gentle giants tower into the air over 350 feet to radiate their
energy. They live in harmony with a variety of species of wildlife
and vegetation. There is a lesson here we can all take to heart.
Even if you are only able to find the time to drive through
these forests there is an invigoration that emerges well before
your trip is started. At points along the coast the waves look
like equestrian trails of stampeding sea stallions. They seem
to guard their borderlands and return to their watery realm
just before reaching the shore--their tour of duty abated for
the moment. These Redwood forests radiate a harmonious synchronicity
with the land and the sea that borders them. Ancient knowledge
resides with the spirits there, they have witnessed thousands
of years and can share much.
On Mount Shasta in California is
the Lodge of the Great Spirit. This site is sacred to the Shasta,
Karok, Madok and Wintun tribes. Shasta lore speaks of Thumbs
Rock found at the eastern end of Red Banks. The legend tells
of a Chief who told his daughter not to go there. The princess
disobeyed and froze to death. Burney Falls is another site on
Mount Shasta and can be found along Hat Creek. Here the energies
are soothing and it is a good place to go for balancing and
centering.
The Dream Circles of Death Valley
are circles about five feet across that are said to bring dreams
to the visitor. The Sierras of California are an area where
the Ley Lines make an unyielding pass through the mountains.
The Colorado Desert contains several stone-edged trails line
with piled rocks and shrines. Tsikumu Mountain outside Santa
Clara is a sacred gateway to Otherworlds where the energy flow
is continuous. These gateways are marked by shrines. In San
Dismas Canyon there is also a small magnetic vortex.
It is from the high plateau country
of southwestern Colorado that many sacred landscapes are revealed.
To the North are the La Plata Mountains that mark the boundary
of the Navajo Nation. To the South are the Rock Wings known
as Shiprock or Tse Bit'a'I, The Home of the Winged Monsters.
To the West is Sleeping Ute Mountain where it is said that the
Rain God gathered all the clouds in his pocket. This is known
as the Four Corners area of the Southwest where Arizona, New
Mexico, California and Colorado meet.
I lived in Colorado for two years
and frequently visited the Garden of the Gods situation between
Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs. I have already told of
my experiences there but the Indians have their own lore. The
Garden of the Gods is a 14,000 acre park that was once called
the Old Red Lands. Here several tribes gathered to celebrate
the Spirits of Place that can still be found with their faces
showing from the rocks. The elders climbed and wedged themselves
into these cliffs to die and the people would later remove the
bodies and transport them to a nearby burial ground. Here is
a place of true wonder. It is strong with the Spirit of Place
and great truths are frequently revealed. It is a place o harmony
and beauty. Simply entering the park you begin to feel the energies
and transformation begins to take place. It is a good site to
visit and there are many locations within the park where you
will be able to work undisturbed amid the beauty of the red
rock walls.
Nearby the Garden of the Gods is
Manitou Springs with 26 capped springs that are now the mineral
fountains. Ute lore tells that Manitou breathed effervescence
into these springs and they named them after Great Spirit. This
is another location where the Spirit of Place is Strong. The
Ute also favored Pagosa Springs, the Place of the Boiling Waters.
The tracings of minerals color the fountain of the town square
as well as the banks of the San Juan River. The Pool of the
Boiling Waters heals illness. This site was also known to the
Tewa people of Arizona who spoke of it as the Place of Warm
Sands. Pagosa was a winter pilgrimage site for these people
who went to hear the voices of their ancestors speak to them.
In Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado, there is a site known
as the Sun Temple. It was built by the Hopi to represent the
Bow, Two and One Horn tribes.
The Everglades National Park in
Florida contains a site sacred to the Seminole and Chocktaw.
Heritage here goes back 2,000 years to the Tequesta and Calusa
who called them the Grassy Waters. When Spaniards of the 15thC.
discovered these lands they named them the Lagoon of the Holy
Spirit. It was the British who arrived in the early 1800's that
thought no end to this watery land existed and named it the
Everglades. There are endless places to work in privacy here
and it's beautiful.
Near Eatonton, Georgia, can be found
the Rock Eagle effigy. Both the Creek and Cherokee claim it
was there before they arrived. Eagle, as you know, is a symbol
of Spirit and this one has a wingspan of 120 feet. It is believed
that this site is a portal to Otherworlds. The white quartz
boulders that were placed here are not native to the site. It
is well known that quartz crystals are excellent conductors
of energy and those who did build the effigy took great care
to transport them from a long distance away. to date it is not
known by whom or how this was done. The effigy is about 5,000
years old, making this one of our most ancient sites. There
is some speculation that the Mississippi people are descendants
of the site's original builders. The Mississippi culture is
renowned for the effigies and burial mounds they constructed
between 1000-1500CE.
The City of Refuge on the mainland
of Hawaii is a healing site. The Hawaiians tell of the Kualele,
these are spirits of Air that often appear as lights. The Kahuna
are their spirits of Water. Pele is the goddess of the volcanoes
or Fire, and the Minahunies are the spirits of Earth. Much like
leprechauns, they are not seen, but they are bringers of good
and bad fortune. I've already mentioned Pele's influence on
the road that they have been trying to build over sacred land
for decades now.
Throughout the state of Iowa there
are mounds that depict animals and humans, many of which are
symbols of shamanic flight. In Jeffers, Minnesota, there is
a petroglyph site that contains over 200 carvings that date
back as far as 3,000 BCE. Here in the grasslands of the prairie
are the rocks where the Indians left carvings. The art tells
of lore that spans 5,000 years to the best of archeological
knowledge. The way these artifacts have been dated is by identifying
the animals and items depicted and their relationship to the
people of specific time periods. The majority are of shamans,
human figures, deer, elk, buffalo, turtles, thunderbirds and
arrows. The wide range of carvings depict sacred ceremonies,
hunting, and important events. At Red Rock Ridge just east of
Pipestone, Minnesota, is a site with 2,000 petroglyphs that
span over 20 miles of ridgeline along the Cottonwood River.
Of all the places I have visited
throughout the country one I am most attracted to is the Quarry
of Peace at Pipestone. For well over 1,000 years the Sacred
Pipes of many Indian nations have been carved out of the stone
brought forth from these quarries. Blackfoot, Cheyenne, Lakota,
and Ojibwa are some of the tribes that have worked them and
they are still active today. It is said that Nations at war
may come here in peace under the safety of Spirit. The majority
of pipes used for the ceremonial purposes of peace and prayer
throughout the United States come from this location.
The pipe bowls depict a buffalo
calf, for it was Buffalo Calf Woman who taught the people the
sacred cleansing of the Sweat Lodge, the Sun Dance of Thanksgiving,
and the ceremony to bring young women into adulthood. They honor
her in this way. Often the Sacred Pipe is used to show the transformation
of physical reality into spiritual reality and back again as
the smoke reveals the unseen worlds and takes prayers up to
Spirit.
Sioux legend speaks of the Three
Maidens at the entrance to Pipestone. These three granite boulders
shelter the spirits of maidens who require offerings of the
Indians who come to quarry there. It is only the Native Americans
who are allowed to work the stones but they do sell their wares
to the public. They will sell raw pipestone from the quarry
sites and pipes are sold at the National Park headquarters in
a shop operated by the Pipestone Indian Shrine Association.
This site is an active ceremonial location; it is visited by
tribes from all Nations and here differences are set aside.
There is only peace at Pipestone and it permeates the air.
As you enter the park you can feel
the presence of Spirit descend upon you. The small site has
a short walk along the creek, through the granite boulders,
the picturesque falls, and of course no visit would be complete
without seeing the faces in the rock formations, one of which
is the Oracle. it is common to find that the Oracle will speak
telepathically here to those who come with the right intentions.
It was here that I was given my Song and underwent a portion
of my initiation rites. I was gifted with a Prayer Staff as
well and this site will always be special to me.
The Pipestone Quarry is a National
Monument, at the Park headquarters there is a wonderful museum
and several petroglyphs that are being preserved. A wealth of
information can be obtained and the Ranger I spoke with shared
a great deal about the history of the area with me. The site
is a small one, it is less than an hour to tour the entire trail,
yet there is a great Spirit of Place that dwells among the stones.
It is a good location to open your channels, enter into altered
states, and explore Otherworlds. It is a place that is lost
in time. The Ranger at the Pipestone Monument gave me a copy
of a story. it was signed by an individual who claimed to have
been the Curator. The office of the monument has no record of
her being employed at the quarry nor with the National Park
Service. They have no knowledge of where she came from or who
she truly was. The story is as follows:
Pipestone Quarry
The earth was red with the blood of the dead, rocks were stained
crimson, and shouts of hate echoed on the wind. For all the
nations of the earth were at war, and the law of Great Spirit
was forgotten. Great Spirit was saddened by the never-ending
din of battle and the cries of pain and agony from His Red Children.
He wished all Indians to live in peace, for His land was large
and there was room for all. Great Spirit called all the nations
together, and they met on the battle-ground stained with warrior's
blood. From a red rock Great Spirit broke a piece away and made
it into a pipe, and in the bowl He placed the bark of red trees,
and lit it with eternal fire. The smoke wandered up to the sky,
and the spirit of mankind embraced the Great Mystery.
Lances were laid down and arrows
returned to their quivers, and all nations of the earth smoked
together in brotherhood. And as nations grew, the pipe of peace
was smoked among them. At the last council that ever was, the
sacred pipe was passed around the circle of chiefs three times.
yet no warrior would touch it, for tempers were still bitter
among the braves. The pipe was met with downcast eyes, and the
tribes people grew sad with thoughts of continued war. On the
fourth pass, a child broke from the arms of his mother and ran
into the sacred council. He snatched the pipe from the Medicine
Man's grasp. White Horn, Elder and chief of council was startled,
and quickly took the pipe from the child. He gazed at it, then
looked up--and all the chiefs were smiling, for the peace pact
had been made. Anger was banished from the land, and all the
nations of the earth were brothers once again.
Great Spirit left this sacred ground
as it had been, stained with the blood of the dead. It remains
forever, a reminder to all the nations of the earth that war
does not please Great Spirit, and never will.

In Missouri the Cahokia Complex
near East St. Louis is the largest earthwork in North America.
Here structures are as much as four stories high with temples
and the abode of the Mississippi Indian Chief. This is a site
of ancient ceremonial use. Montana offers pictograph Caves State
Park near Billings. This land was sacred to the Crow and preserves
three sandstone caves. Pictograph is the largest of the three
and the paintings are over 15,000 years old. Ghost Cave, so
named for the three bodies found in 1940, is to the west. The
Cave of the Elders is in the center of these two.
Nebraska has effigies of winged
humans (shamanic flight), birds, eagles, and mushrooms that
are traced to the Hopewells. Nevada has sites near Lake Taho.
It is said that the clouds that form over Las Vegas and its
surrounding areas depict the face of Great Spirit or an Indian
Chief. These have been seen by thousands of witnesses (including
myself) and pictures have appeared in the newspaper. The new
airport was constructed on grounds sacred to the Indians there
and a legal battle ensued. Litigation continues as they struggle
to reclaim their land and one obstacle after another has prevented
the airport from opening. It is said that the spirits there
refuse to yield to such a purpose and are the cause of the delays
(much like Pele in Hawaii).
North of Tularosa, New Mexico is
Three Rivers Petroglyph Site. The carvings here are over 600
years old and said to be the work of the Jornada Tribe of the
Mogollon Nation. This collection of petroglyphs is the largest
in the United States and there have been over 20,000 found there.
They face Sierra Blanca Mountain, a location sacred to the Apache.
There are symbols here that are found nowhere else, such as
the six-fingered hand. It is not known exactly what it represents,
but in my opinion it may be a hand of the Spirit World, or perhaps
even Spirit itself...the 6 sides of the shamanic crystal with
the hand being the 7th representing union amid the Seven Sacred
Directions of Spirit.
In Ohio, Serpent Mound State Memorial
can be found near Locust Grove along the Brush Creek. Here a
snake effigy is over a quarter mile in length. As a symbol of
the energy force of life and rebirth, as well as wisdom and
enlightenment, it represents many things to the Indian people.
To the shaman it is also a symbol of out-of-body flight. This
effigy was built by the Hopewell Indians between 1000-400 BCE.
They later became the Mississippi culture. The excavation of
this mound has shown no human remains and its purpose is still
speculated on. My opinion is that it had to do with shamanic
rites of passage and the transformation of the inner spirit.
Both the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys are covered with thousands
of ceremonial and burial mounds, temple complexes and cities
as well as Spirit Paths. In Chillicothe, Ohio, the Chillicothe
Effigy of a psychedelic mushroom about one foot in length and
wrapped in a copper sheath was discovered. it is thought to
be a shamanic power wand. Near Marietta is the Ceremonial Way
of the Hopewells. this pathway leads from the Muskingham river
up to a sacred complex site.
Craig Mound at Spiro Mounds State
Park in Oklahoma is a site of the Wichita and Caddoan Indians
dating back over 1,000 years. The site was a ceremonial and
trade center and excavation has revealed nearly 200 burial units
with 9 layers of building. Phenomenal blue lights can be seen
over Craig Mound, the largest burial mound at the site. A friend
of mine, Tinker, who lives near there has stories of lights
that appear in the area quite frequently. Quartz crystals are
also found here and they are believed to be of shamanic heritage.
Crater Lake National Park in Oregon
is said to be the abode of the spirit who presides over the
Land of the Dead. The ancestors
came from a cave in Crater Lake and it is here that deceased
spirits return. Those that are evil must remain in the fire
cone of Wizard Island, which stands nearly 700 feet above the
surface of the lake. It's breathtakingly beautiful there. the
Spirit of Place will only allow the wise elders to approach
and communicate with their ancestors. It is the Kalamath Indians
who hold this island as sacred and will not speak its true name
outside their culture. The incredible blue water of this lake
reaches a depth of nearly 2,000 feet making it the deepest in
the United States. It is said to be the purest water in the
world and a place where visions are sought and received. I was
there in the spring when heavy winter snows had not yet melted
and access to the island was impossible. The rim of the crater
is 2,000 feet above the lake. The volcano, Mt. Mazama, stood
a majestic 12,000 feet above this site almost 8,000 years ago.
Violent eruptions emptied the magma chamber beneath the mountain
and caused the mountaintop to collapse creating the caldera
of the lake. Crater Lake measures 6 miles long and 4 1/2 miles
wide. During the open season which begins in late June or early
July (depending on the snowfall and when I was there it was
over the rooftop of the station house) a boat tour to the island
departs hourly to drop visitors off for explorations.
The Oregon Vortex is located in
Grants Pass along the Rogue River. Indians called this area
The Forbidden Ground. It is a place between worlds where half
the vortex is below ground and half above. The 165 foot circle
produces strange growth patterns in the trees causing the majority
of them to lean towards magnetic North. Height perceptions are
reversed and the horizon is larger while objects closer actually
appear to be smaller. The main vortex and other minor ones are
unique. People facing South appear shorter than those facing
North. When they walk away from you tward the South they appear
taller and grow shorter as they approach you. It is an illusion,
but an anomaly of the site. There is nowhere in the vortex that
you will appear to stand perfectly straight. Because of these
experiences and the actual growth patterns of the trees and
vegetation of the area the Indians shunned the site. This site
is interesting if not functional and I found the energies outside
the immediate vortex to be more workable with a simple sense
of beauty in the area. What others experience there remains
for them to tell.
Ringing Rocks State Park along the
Delaware River in Pennsylvania is a necessary visit for anyone
seeking out the unusual. It is here that a river of boulders
meanders with their crystalline intonations that ring out when
struck with small stones or hammers. The Spirit of Place is
strong here as well known to the Unami and Munsee Indians who
later became the Delaware. it is the Unami who tell of the Little
People who live in the woods, of Older Brother Sun and Mother
Earth, of the Great Horned Serpent, and the Thunderers who are
winged spirits that protect the people. This is a very spiritual
site.
The Colorado River Canyons of Utah
and Arizona are places that provide the oneness with Spirit.
Here you may experience multiple altered states of consciousness
at places marked by rock art and small ruins. Throughout the
southern portion of Wisconsin there are numerous mounds that
depict winged humans, turtles, birds, humans, and bears. Public
access can be found in the Lower Dells near New Lisbon. Birds
and winged humans, you will recall, are symbols of out-of-body
experiences and frequently mark shamanic pathways. It is said
there are over 5,000 effigy mounds and some are quite large.
Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming
contains several mineral hot springs which are reputed for their
healing qualities. Here geysers such as Old Faithful show the
energies of Mother Earth on an hourly basis and are excellent
visual displays of the concentrations of the Earth's forces.
There is now seismic activity there that is causing the wildlife
to exit the park and geologists to be concerned about changes
taking place. Vast areas of the park are being closed off to
the public as precautionary measures and scientists are closely
watching the developments. About 100 miles West is the Big Horn
Medicine Wheel. This site is about 2,000 years old. It is here
that the Crow, Arapaho, and Shoshone held their ceremonies.
The site has been fenced for preservation, but the Medicine
Wheel is unique in that 28 spokes align with Ley Lines that
span the world. A few of the spokes point to shorter distances
such as the Oregon Vortex, the trench of Southern Oregon, and
Santa Barbara. It is a location with celestial alignments that
mark the changing of seasons. This is another site where the
origin of the Medicine Wheel is unknown since the current indigenous
tribes claim it was there before they arrived.
Another site is Devil's Tower, or
Mateo Teepee. The Kiowa tell that seven sisters were running
from a bear and climbed upon a boulder. They prayed to Spirit
to save them and the boulder grew. The bear became angry and
tried in vain to reach them clawing at the sides of Mateo Teepee.
His claw marks can still be seen. The seven sisters were unable
to get down from the heights and Spirit raised them up into
the heavens where they formed the constellation we now know
as the Pleiades. This land is still considered sacred and is
accessible.
Some Personal Favorites: Enchanted
Rock State Park is located near Fredericksburg in central Texas.
This site is definitely a shamanic door to Otherworld and a
place of ceremony. The Tonkawa Indians believed that the cracking
sounds and glow from the granite rocks were signs of the site
being haunted. The Apache, on the other hand, instruct their
youths to come here listen to the Spirit of the Mountain. My
experience here combined many things in a short amount of time.
A sudden storm broke out while driving along the highway toward
the park. Torrential rains and heavy winds slowed the approach.
I felt the sense of being "timed". As my RV was nestled
into a parking space the storm suddenly ceased and a rainbow
formed over the dome....what a welcome! Park regulations did
not allow RV's into the campground and I was able only to spend
a matter of hours there, but they were very interesting.
The beauty of this location is that
everywhere you look is as poignant as the last view. It is a
good location for centering and bringing balance to the inner
spirit. The dome glows from the light of the full moon shining
down on the quartz crystals embedded in the granite. It was
just half full when I was there and unfortunately I was unable
to have that full experience. The Park Ranger explained that
during severe cold temperatures the stones were known to make
cracking noises. This led to many superstitions about Enchanted
Rock being haunted in the mundane approach to the lore.
Enchanted Rock was like walking
through a giant harmonious rock garden as I made my way up to
the Dome. I had much the same feeling here as I did visiting
the Garden of the Gods in Colorado. It is a very peaceful site
and the Spirit of Place can be felt everywhere you go. There
are three main peaks there: Turkey Peak standing about 1400
feet, Little rock that stands about 1700 feet, and of course
Enchanted Rock reaching all of 1800 feet. Climbing is allowed
and there are many locations where you can be alone to work
in seclusion. I found a spot where a boulder looked as if it
were a closed fist with a finger pointing out another. The one
it pointed to seemed to be a buffalo; its head bent and grazing.
A small boulder only a few feet away appeared to be inviting
me to take a seat and it was there I chose to begin my meditation.
I could see the energy radiating
in the air and felt it seep through my entire being before I
even began my work. The weather was cool but comfortable, and
the air clear and clean. It is a site that has much to offer
and easily leads to states of altered consciousness. I began
walking back along the trail after about 1 1/2 hours of Medicine
work. The sun had begun to set rather quickly. As the path turned
into the parking lot a bird began to serenade my last few steps
with a beautiful song as it flitted amid the trees to follow
me. I had no sooner returned to the RV and started on my notes
when the rain began to dance on the roof. There was such multiplicity
to the elements during my visit and a wide range of experiences
in a very short span of time. The elements, the wildlife, and
the enchanting Spirit of Place here all lived up to the name...so
did my work. Native Americans come here to dream and vision
quest. The trails are beautiful and it is an ideal location
for such an endeavor...just bring a tent. Even the thunder spoke
before I left and the rain that fell was now gentle and soothing.
Lightning flashed in the night sky
and lit the area several times. Just as I began to pull out
the clouds cleared, the skies opened up, and Grandmother Moon
smiled. Enchanted Rock showed me its face again in silhouette.
I had no sooner gotten onto the highway when the skies clouded
over again and lightning bolts streak through the darkness.
It was as if nature was waving at me and announcing the coming
Vernal Equinox with a show of remarkable beauty...and saying
goodbye. It was truly an enchanting experience and the onset
to a series of similar events (with cleansing rains) that took
place at each sacred site I entered throughout my journey and
became increasingly more pronounced.
At Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico,
there is a different experience to be had. The Caverns themselves
are amazing, but their history intrigued me just as much. I
met with a Park Ranger who was an Apache Medicine Woman and
we spoke of many things. I was able to learn a few of the local
legends and really enjoyed what she had to tell me deeply appreciating
the time we were able to share. I learned that at the natural
entrance to the bat caves there are nearly 100 pieces of rock
art hidden from view. All that is visible to the public is a
single pictograph on the right of the trail's 4th switchback.
The site has very strong energy for healing and was a place
of shamanic work long ago. This energy is felt upon entering
the cavern but the site of the rock art is inaccessible except
from a seat a short distance away in the amphitheater. It was
there that I sat and worked. I could feel the energy present
and I know that the Spirit of Place lingers still. it is not
a location that affords ritual working opportunities per se,
but you can visit and know it for what it once was, or work
through meditation with the Spirit of Place. The sacred ground
itself is off limits to the public. Entering the Caverns is
entering the womb of Mother Earth and I spent two days within
them.
This same Medicine Woman did share
with me the fact that there has been too much desecration of
sacred sites in the area. She said that the local Apache Indians
were fighting to keep these sites out of public hands and I
can certainly understand why. She felt very strongly about this
and it was sad to see that things had come to that. It does
bear repeating that holy ground deserves respect; and that alone
is what will preserve it. She has been asked by her people to
re-educate the elders who have lived in the city and grown apart
from the ways of the Apache. This is a great honor and I have
much respect for the work she is doing there and elsewhere.
She believes that too many site visitors are taking without
giving back. Again it is worth repeating: working at a sacred
site brings many rewards, but you must give back to the Earth
for the gifts you receive. Please remember this. An active site
should be respected as such and visits should not be undertaken
without expressed permission from the religious leader or careful
consideration within the bounds of local customs and tribal
law. If you are granted such a visit, please maintain a deep
reverence for the location and your activities there. Don't
trash it.
At Carlsbad several Midden Rings,
or Mescal Pits, can be found throughout the park. There is one
that I found to be quite interesting. A shelter on the left
of the road as you enter Carlsbad has a marker and pull off
where you can park and walk into the area. Under the overhand
of the shelter on the left hand wall is some rock art, and several
tiny ring divots in a row on the floor. It is strictly my opinion,
but I believe these rings were uses for shamanic purposes to
regulate dosages of Mescal or Peyote during a shamanic ceremony.
I cannot be certain, but there is a good sized midden just outside
it. It is a small site but it would most certainly have served
a shaman working alone or with a few others, and would lend
itself well to individuals who wished to work alone. The middens
are pits where the Mescal or Peyote are prepared and the divots
in the floor were the size of a thumbprint, well worked to provide
dosage sized portions of the plants. I have found that despite
the tourism of these locations most people are respectful if
they come upon someone who is meditating or working quietly.
There is a legend about the caverns
themselves that tells of a Medicine Man who went into the cavern
and never came out again. His people would bring food and leave
it for him at the entrance. There is another that it was a place
of shamanic initiation and I can see where it would lend itself
to such practices being a womb within Mother Earth that is vast
and deep. Whatever the case may be, there is certainly an Otherworldly
quality about the caverns and surrounding area. I did distinctly
feel the womb and energy changes within myself being there.
There is a sulfur taste and smell to the air as you descend
into the caverns below. It gave me a feeling of being in Middle
Earth--in another world far removed from our own. I found myself
light headed, my knees were shaking, and my whole body tingled
by the time I had finished exploring. It was necessary to ground
myself a few times. When I had left I had a short bout of nausea
as a side effect of the three days in total that I was there.
It is all too easy to overdo, and while it lasted only about
10 minutes there was a purging effect. it was worth it to have
the experience, meet with the Spirit of Place, listen to the
Voice of the Land, be held in the womb of Mother Earth, and
experience the energies that are so strong there. This was the
place of my shamanic death experience on this journey, and with
it the rebirth of my spirit which had been purified at Enchanted
Rock. It was also at this point that I realized I had begun
to Dance the Wheel (having intended this to be a research trip)
and was actually undergoing a major initiation to a new level
of my Medicine. It didn't stop here.

Another location is near Puget Sound
and Port Townsend in the far northwestern corner of Washington.
The vortex is found in an area where the dense trees and frequent
rains seem to was away all negativity. There is a weightiness
here. It beckons and bids you to stay in this enchanted rainforest.
It is a good place for healing. There is also a gentle nude,
an unease, that tells you when it is time to go. It is found
at Crescent Lake in the Olympic National Forest...Sol Duc. The
vortex is surrounded by ancient trees that are draped in a thick
bright neon green moss and shadows dance throughout the day.
It is an enchanting vibrant beauty where Earth energies fill
the air in an aromatic blend of invigorating fragrances. The
Nature Spirits are everywhere and Huckleberries flourish in
the tops of stumps as you step back in time to a primal land.
Dense ferns grow tall, as blankets of moss drape over trees
both fallen and standing and then down onto the forest floor.
The thick canopy of the trees is enhanced by the ribbons of
water trailing alongside the rocky shoulders of the hills. Red
barked Madrona trees mix with rich Hemlocks, Douglas Firs 175-750
years old, and Cedars the size of small Coastal Redwoods, while
night shadows dance in ancient groves.
In the early 1900's the nearby Sol
Duc Hot Springs became popular as a place to go for healing
spa sessions. nestled in an old growth virgin forest beside
a glacier fed river, they have been enclosed now and reservations
are required well before a visit...at least 3 months in advance.
There is a trail here that leads less than a mile into the Olympic
Forest to reach Marymere Falls. It is a journey that I would
recommend to anyone. When I visited this site it was Spring,
at the time of the Vernal Equinox. The rains were falling (again)
in a heavy mist and brought the forest to life darkening the
woods, enriching the greens in the leaves, and nearly illuminating
the already vibrant green mosses. Rocks took on greater depths
and their features grew more pronounced. Brooks babbled and
sand with the voice of water on stone rushing into miniature
white water whirls and breaking into clear runs again. The leaves
rustled their son with the sound of rainfall and did their best
to shelter the way. It was a walk that bathed my spirit, purifying
it as I made my way back to the falls.
At Marymere the waters rush down
the Sol Duc River splitting themselves as if they had been blown
from clear glass. These waters begin rolling into emerald swirls
and thrusting their way around the dark moss covered boulders.
There they were claimed by the white waters that sent their
mists rising high into the air against the rock walls before
making their way once again. Songbirds trilled added to the
Voice of the Land and the symphony was complete. This is one
of the most melodic voices you can experience and poetically
lends itself to words. Marymere Falls is truly a sacred site.
By the time you arrive at the falls you are centered in the
oneness with nature and meditation has come about naturally.
The enlightenment comes as you begin to focus your thoughts,
they become clarified here and the answers to your questions
are as crystalline as the waters. It is so easy to become one
with the Spirit of Place and it is a site of renewal that offers
up its blessings. The gifts you leave are well received here
and it is so easy to expel negative energies and habits into
the rushing waters to be purified and carried away to Mother
Earth. The waters here simply draw them gently but firmly from
you and you can watch them go, feel them leaving with a beauty
to the process. You can readily visualize them being cleansed
and turned into positive energies that will be put to good use
elsewhere. Remember to bless her as She has blessed you. This
is a place where you may seek whatever you wish and the way
to finding it properly will be shown to you. You may leave then,
prepared to do the work necessary to bring about your desired
results, as you continue to strive to attain your goals with
the enlightenment you receive.
In the Black Hills of South Dakota
stands Bear Butte, a mountain that many believe to be considered
the home of the Cheyenne religion. They call this place Noahvose,
the Place of Maheo, the Above Spirit. It was at this site that
a Cheyenne shaman known as Sweet Medicine, waited for four years
to receive the sacred Four Arrows from Spirit. These arrows
were Maheo's teachings and taboos used to lead the people in
spirituality. Two dark arrows stood for the teachings of war
while two light arrows represented peace. he also received the
Four Commandments: Adultery, Theft, Killing, and Marriage within
one's own people are strictly forbidden by Spirit. The sacred
Four Arrows are still in the possession of the Southern Cheyenne
and they will occasionally bring them to the mountain for ceremonies.
Frank Fools Crow, a Lakota Holy
Man has a small shrine at Bear Butte. Not only was he a visionary,
ambassador, healer and storyteller, but also the Ceremonial
Chief of the Teton Lakota from 1890-1989. It was here that he
gained his healing powers. Fools Crow promoted unity and respect
for all people regardless of their heritage. This did not sit
well with all of his people, but he was doing the work of Spirit
and it was his life-long quest. There is a movement now to prevent
his teachings from being made public though that is going to
be difficult as there are books written that have been on the
market for a long time now. I am one who feels they should be
available if for no other reason than as a tribute to a lifetime
of work. Though his teachings are very much in keeping with
my own and I have great respect for the man. He was a visionary
and believed the teachings should be shared...an opinion I hold
as well.
Today the Indians still visit and
pray at this sacred mountain and ribboned trails wind up the
side of the northern face. This sacred trail is decorated with
a rainbow of colored prayer ribbons, cloths, and other gifts.
Sweat Lodge sites are also visible from the trails and the Spirit
of Place is welcoming as it takes form in the rocks. A chief
seems to stand watch over the plains below; and a bear rises
on its hind legs to speak of the sanctity of the mountain. A
natural chimney in the rock at the top of the mountain is still
used for questing and shamanic purposes. The grasses blow in
the wind and trees flourish amid the rocks and prairie flowers.
This is a place of peace, a place where all people may say their
prayers and know the oneness, a place where the portals to other
dimensions exist.
A strong sense of Native American
heritage resides here, a sense of a time past, of the present,
and a preserved future. A small herd of buffalo grazes just
outside the gate to the park, reminding us of the sustenance
of the Earth and of the need to pray from our hearts for what
we would ask of Spirit. The Wind's fluted voice speaks of the
air we breathe. Water runs down the mountain in spring to cleanse
and heal. A fire is kindled in the hearts of those who visit
here. At the base of the mountain is a small lake. Nature lives
in harmony at Bear Butte.
I was blessed to have been a guest
as Winter's last hues began blossoming into the pastels of Spring.
It took me back to the Lakota legend naming this site Mato Pah.
It speaks of a bear and a she-monster called Uncegila that fought
each other until the bear bled and fell. The Spirit of Place
shook the land and covered his body with the Earth. The bear
became the Keeper of Dreams. He sleeps here still, and grants
his Medicine to those worthy of receiving it. From the South
the mountain looks just like a slumbering bear. It is said by
both the Lakota and the Cheyenne
that the monster Uncegila was born of the Great Flood. She was
defeated here by the mighty Thunderbird Spirit, Wakinyan, who
caused her heart to shatter and her bones to be scattered throughout
the ridges of the Badlands.
This is where the Black Hills stand
as reminders to the people of their humble powers when compared
to the awesome forces of the spirits of the Earth. It is here
that Chief Crazy Horse came often to have visions. in a cave
on the East slope Spirit gifted him with seven stones that brought
messages from the Spirit World. They sparked during the healing
ceremonies he performed. His Teaching Hill is locates in the
eastern meadow where he held council. It was Luther Standing
Bear who said: "We did not think of the great open plains,
the beautiful rolling hils, and the winding streams with the
tangled growth, as wild. Earth was bountiful and we were surrounded
with the blessings of the Great Mystery." It was from the
view of Bear Butte that I was shown enlightenment, and how I
am to serve in the future with my pathwork. The Web of Life
and my place in it was very humbling, and I was honored to be
granted the vision.
In the Badlands National Park of
South Dakota is the Sage Creek Wilderness Area. The Lakota people
called this area Mako Sica and used it as a hunting ground for
buffalo. It is said it is a good place to hide, and it was here
that the last of the Ghost Dancers held ceremony in the late
1800's when the Government banned the ceremony. this area is
home to the Oglala Sioux who oversee the care of the park. The
sacred sites on this land are not open to the public as far
as I know. Also in the Badlands is the Valley of Spirits. It
is here that the Blackfoot people tell of the first Buffalo
Stone being found over 1,000 years ago. Buffalo Stones carry
the Power of the Bull. They are used in ceremonies to plant
sacred tobacco, in dreaming, and can bring forth the Buffalo
in human form. Shoshone petroglyphs are found here along the
Milk River. They are said to mirror the Spirit of Place and
the Blackfoot Indians believe they were created by the spirits.
The Grand Canyon is seen as a Sipapu,
or place of entrance and exit of spirits to the Above and Below
Worlds. here dizzying heights mingle with gnarled and twisted
weathered trees. The canyon hillsides are covered with forests
of Pinion and red-barked Ponderosa Pines. The red bark of the
Ponderosa Pine does not take color until the tree is nearly
100 years old. Its bark is seen as sacred. here the next view
is as breathtaking as the last and a majestic humility exudes
the atmosphere. The Hopi Indians tell of the Kachina Spirits.
They make dolls from the native cottonwood roots to replicate
these spirits and teach their children about them. There are
different Kachina Spirits. For example, Tuma-uyl wears a slitted
eye mask; Pawik is masked with a headband sporting two feathers;
and Kyash wears a bird mask. These spirits appear in their villages
wearing their masked dancer costumes from late January until
July.
Throughout the canyon and along
the winding green Colorado River far below can be found countless
sacred sites and shrines. These can be used for independent
work, but just about any place in the canyon itself will do
since the Sacred Energy lines are strong here and you cannot
help tapping into them. It is along the Colorado River that
you will find Havasupai Falls, an excellent place for experiencing
a variety of altered states of consciousness and Otherworld
encounters. During the summer season Indian traders set up stands
and line the roads into the canyon areas with their wares. it
is a good place to shop for incidentals that you might like
to have and work with in sacred spaces. You will find everything
from blankets to jewelry and instruments to novelties while
Kachina dolls are the most prevalent.
New Mexico is a large part of the
American hub for Ley Lines and vortex locations. It is also
home to Chimayo, a small humble adobe chapel that has been dubbed
the Lourdes of America. It is a place of healing and miracles
and deserves to be brought to your attention. When I first arrived
there was a mass being held so I spent that time in the small
chapel to the side of the main sanctuary. This, too, is a humble
old building that lays out in the form of a cross and there
is a heavy sanctity that can be felt upon entering. Candles
were lit and prayers written on scraps of paper adorning the
prayer alters at all quarters of the building. I could feel
the energy of the prayers that have been said there. it weighted
in an air of all those who have brought their pain and faith
to leave it behind. Tears flowed down my cheeks and I found
myself sobbing hard, as if I was sharing it all and there was
an overwhelming pain with it. As I stepped outside into the
sunshine I felt much better, the sadness seemed to stay behind
and I was uplifted. Mass had ended and the chapel doors to the
main sanctuary were wide open. When I entered through them I
sensed the history and many years of pilgrimages that people
had made. Many of the same sensations felt in the smaller chapel
returned, though in greater force.
I looked around at the adornments
visitors had left as offerings, lit a candle, and said prayers
of my own. I then went into the smaller room off to the left
of the altar. Crutches and canes hung among testimonial letters
that spoke of miracles, healings and blessings that had occurred
for many who had visited over the years. A small cell at the
back of the room caught my attention. I had to duck my head
to enter through the little doorway (and I am just under 5 feet
tall). There in the middle of the clay floor was a hole filled
with the red soil of Chimayo. I knew I was at the heart of this
sacred center. There was a sense of awe, of great peace, of
grace and a generous love residing there. I was dealing with
a case of shingles, an ailment I must experience from time to
time, and rubbed a small amount of the soil on my arms. Immediately
the skin felt soothed and took to the fine moist soil. My knees
were troubling me from three days of hiking through Carlsbad
Caverns and the local canyons and I rubbed the soil over the
joints. it was about three hours later when I noticed the pain
was gone.
When I returned home I learned my
daughter (who had been diagnosed with a serious disease) had
been to the doctor. He informed her that there was no sign of
the disease, that perhaps she had been misdiagnosed, and that
her condition was treatable. She went into the hospital for
a radiation treatment and was informed that she was pregnant---that
in itself was a miracle since the odds of her ever having a
child were one in a million. I knew my prayers had been answered.
This was my experience at Chimayo. You can make of it what you
will, but the visit certainly triggered positive responses for
me. I can only tell you that I was deeply moved and took away
a deep sense of healing peace inside me that day...and a small
pouch of the soil to bring home. I use it sparingly now and
then. I have shared it with others as well and they, too, have
had good results. Chimayo is a place you must go see and judge
for yourself. The site is a very powerful one, touching lives
of thousands of people annually. It was originally built as
a shrine to acknowledge where many miracles had occurred. It
now continues to produce them and there are countless stories
attesting to that fact.
Canyon de Chelly National Monument
is within the Navajo Reservation. It is known to have five periods
of Native American culture represented throughout the 83,000
acres. The tribes who lived here built cave dwellings in the
walls above the canyon that is 26 miles long and contains a
number of early rock paintings. Some of the New Mexico tribes
who lived here date back as far as 340CE. and there are several
sacred sites. I believe that Chaco Canyon was the most impressive
for me. It is a large site settled by the Anasazi culture during
the mid 800's CE. and later by the Hopi Indians. Here half above
and half under the ground are the Kivas--the ceremonial chambers
and ritual areas. These Kivas are the symbol of Mother Earth's
womb and most contain a Sipapu (large stone rings with a lid)
that is a place of entry and exit into the Below World. All
the Great Kivas have stone circles that held the base of the
poles supporting the roofs now long gone.
Navajo legends tell of the roadways
being used as tunnels for the Great Ones. I believe they are
also supportive of the shamanic dimensional roads used in out-of-body
trance states. it would be along these lines that the worlds
of the Ancestors and Spirit would blend. They are the Spirit
Paths used by the shaman, initiates, and people for their ritual
and ceremonial purposes. The roads were planned, engineered,
built and maintained by these people. Four hundred miles of
them have been mapped and they are best seen from the air. Double
and quadruple road segments have been found to relate to ceremonial
purposes as well. these roads were also the paths of pilgrimage
for people who came from as far away as Mexico and Canada to
gather here. There is much speculation as to how these pilgrimages
were timed for the masses that made them from two directions.
To me that makes no difficult perception, they would have acted
on seasonal cues of forthcoming equinoxes or solstices under
the guidance of their shamans. I don't see the difficulty in
that understanding at all but evidently historians have more
of a problem with it.
There are several ruins that can
be visited in Chaco and I managed to see quite a few. perhaps
the most famous site I visited here was Pueblo Bonito and its
Great House. The name means "beautiful town". Here
the prayer offerings of the people were made on top of the dups
as everything was believed to return to Mother Earth. These
Kivas are still used today as meeting places for spiritual ceremonies.
The smaller Kivas are used for small groups or single families
and the Great Kivas for the gathered tribes or the community
as a whole. In Pueblo Bonito the doorways align in a place of
commerce and public ceremony. There is a feeling of progression
as you go through the rooms and you do get the feeling that
ceremonies may have been conducted here that included different
levels of passage into the Otherworlds. The Great House covers
three acres and many of the rooms open onto the roadways that
run across the canyon leading to other sacred sites. All are
within a 100 mile diameter of the Ley center.
Several hundred Great Houses and
their courtyards exist here in the canyon. I suspect they may
have been used as celestial roadways, as much as giant Medicine
Wheel might be used. The complex contains over 800 rooms and
30 Kivas. The majority of the village Kivas are accessible.
There are over 70 surrounding villages and this was considered
the Middle Place of the Anasazi spiritual world. The location
dates from 900-1115 CE. There are two Great Kivas with altars
and stones set long ago. Several people were present in the
off-season when I visited, but all were respectful of each other's
space to seek what they had come for and explore the ruins.
It was "quiet" in spite of the numbers that were there.
There was even a flute player to serenade the evening as I fell
asleep.
Casa de Arroyo is very small. It
is a D-shaped Great House that once rose three or four stories
high in the rear and gradually became one story in the front.
Casa Rinconada displays its Great Kiva as a high ceremonial
chamber with an underground passageway used by the shaman for
entrances and exits which presented the drama of appearing and
vanishing. There are good spiritual energies here. Casa Rinconada
presents the largest Kiva in the valley. Ceremonies here involved
drumming and dancing and there is a celestial linkage as it
is built on a north-south axis.
Chetro Ketl is a site with a small
Kiva perhaps only 20 some feet across with its perimeter still
obvious. Here the whispered feeling of ancient songs sun, feint
visions of sun-darkened hands setting the stones in place, of
sacred ceremonies held awaken upon the Wind as it gently blows.
Outside lay the ruins of homes where families struggled to survive
this harsh rocky land, where children played, where laughter
rang in the air. it is silent now, they the Spirit of Place
here still speaks in a voice of peaceful solitude and let me
listen in a on a time long ago. It was here that I experienced
stepping back in time and was allowed a vision. The Great Kiva
is more intact and the sanctuary layout clearly shows it as
a place of high ceremony.
Una Veda is a small canyon near
the visitor center where petroglyphs are found. There are carvings
of a Kachina, shaman, spiral, flying buck, domestic animals
and wildlife that look down on the world below from the right-hand
wall. On the left wall are reptiles, a sun, a roadrunner, snake,
and antelope. This is a place for entering trances and a doorway
to Otherworlds. The canyon is a place of healing as well as
the wisdom in its ancient silence.
The energies at all these sites
were strong and vibrant. Otherworlds opened and I had vivid
impressions of life here long ago. Chaco is an excellent place
to come and meditate, to work on your spiritual growth, to journey
and to dream. It is too much to see in one day. I spent two
days hear and could easily have stayed much longer. I got it
all in, but ended up with a headache in the end. This is quite
common when you expose yourself to too many energy sites in
too short a time. There just isn't space to properly attune
to them all. It is much better to work at one and work well
than push for too much...believe me. But I was on a research
trip, you see?
There is one last spot in this area
that is worth mentioning. El Faro, the Light House. It is found
about 10 miles to the North of Chaco and believed to have been
a signal fire site. It is an obvious line-of-site location and
even little Pueblo Alto can be seen from this distance. Signal
fire locations were an important way of communicating between
the villages and this would certainly fit the profile.
Ley Lines and Vortexes

Sedona:
Sedona, Arizona. It has a flow to its name and a flow to the
energy that is present there. There are more Ley Lines and vortexes
converging in this area than anywhere else in the United States.
American, Mexican, and Canadian Indians have long recognized
it as a place of Great Medicine. Filled with underground waterways,
fissures, canyons, sink holes and fault lines its energies are
phenomenal. Indians speak of
Sedona as a knowing woman, a land that is feminine in its nurturance.
Because of the texture of the land the lines often run along
the ridges, buttes, through gaps or waterways. They flow with
the landscape. It is in this area that the Leys can be found
to spread themselves as much as 200 feet in width and major
lines can be over a mile wide. The widths vary from time to
time relative to the energy flows they possess at the moment.
Progress has not held back from
Sedona but due to the Native American culture of the area awareness
of these sacred sites has been a presiding factor. Hosting so
many types of Earth's energies, Sedona must be experienced in
doses as too much of a good thing can have a negative effect.
We have all experienced over-indulgences--do not do that here.
Remember that moderation will take you much further. If you
elect to visit the area plan a stay that will allow you plenty
of time and not force you to try to take it all in at once.
If you cannot spare the time, select a site with care and enjoy
the experience it provides you.
Sedona is a location where you can
reconnect spiritually. The Earth is a rich red and in shamanic
terms is is the good red earth that is recognized as having
sacred life-giving powers. The world over, tribal nations have
used the red earth to signify the life force. Here the preservation
is a gift to the world. Perhaps we have finally begun to hear
the Voice of the Land. Our children are learning early on and
later through schooling and higher education about the importance
of the ecological structure of Mother Earth. They are recognizing
the required balance for the sustenance of all life and the
preventative methods being developed to maintain it. They are
learning how to care for the Earth in a way keeping with the
times. Many Native American legends have long foretold of this
time, one that would come when Mother Earth would need healing
and the people would have to give back. it is not a bad thing,
or something that must be feared, but simply a time of doing
what must be done.
These legends speak of people from
all races coming together and learning the ways of the Indian
People. They have always felt they were responsible for the
care of the lands in which they dwelt. Their ways were simple
and in keeping with their lives. Today we live in a technological
age and it requires technology to maintain it. Still we can
each do our own simple part just by maintaining our own space.
By refusing to pollute, by tending our gardens, by treating
the Earth as the Mother that She is...by caring we can make
a difference. It is a choice for each individual to make since
we are all responsible for our own actions and knon our own
abilities. Today's children are aware of that responsibility
and will grow to be the healers of the Earth, the new caretakers.
To visit Sedona is to recognize this in the beauty and energy
present in the land despite its development, there is genuine
harmony here.
The canyons of this area reveal many
sacred sites and it is said there are hundreds. Some of these
sites are along Ley Lines that span the world. There are better
known areas and a few suggested locations would be: Airport
Mesa, Apache Leap, Bell Rock, Boynton Canyon, Cathedral Rock
also known as Red Rock Crossing, Coffee Pot Rock, Chapel of
the Holy Cross, Devil's Dining Room, Devil's Kitchen, Fay Canyon,
and Indian Gardens. Others would be: Long Canyon, Mund's Mountain,
Post Office, Red Canyon, Secret Canyon, Schnebley hill, Sunset
Point, and West Fork. All are excellent locations to experience
the pulsating energies of the Sedona hub.
The scale of sites, ley Lines, roads,
and energies in this region is astounding. Often a notch in
a ley Line will reveal the
natural marking of the Sun and Moon as they rise and set at
different times of the year and such sites are excellent examples
of land temples. People are instinctively attracted to Sedona.
You cannot enter this area without sensing its special beauty
and energies. It is because of this that people come to reawaken
their inner spirit, to recharge their inner batteries, to be
healed, to center themselves, to simply tune into the Earth.
The Tourist Information Center has vortex maps available as
do the countless little shops and bookstores. Everyone in Sedona
is aware of the power here. All major locations are relatively
accessible by vehicle and short hikes, and of course climbing
from there to whatever points you wish (though it is not always
necessary to do so). This is very much a Native American cultural
community merging with that of New Ager's who have shops everywhere
in the downtown area. It's highly commercialized with tours
by land or air and while that's one way to see it, I chose to
make my own path. Nothing surprising there, eh?
I entered the Sedona area through
Oak Creek Canyon. Winding its way down from the San Francisco
Peaks near Flagstaff, Arizona, as the switchbacks blossomed
and beckoned the spiritual seeker in me to come forth I entered
with an awed smile. It is an excellent way to descend the mountains
and emerge into this red rock country. Breathtaking views break
from every turn as the rushing voice of Oak Creek speaks of
an ancient wilderness that is mingled with urbanization in a
harmony that is only possible in Sedona. With the magnificent
views, dizzying heights awaken the senses alerting and raising
your consciousness often before you notice it--or maybe you
do, it is such a striking landscape that it elicits an intake
of breath and a long exhaled "ohhhhhhh".
This area serves to cleans the spirit
and soothe the soul as the textured formations dance with the
hues of the Earth. The energy is so strong you immediately become
invigorated and excited. Oak Creek brings forth a sense of balance
and echoes the weave of the old with the new. It sets the stage
for experiencing other sites that await down in Sedona and the
outlying area...this was just driving through! Entering through
the canyon was an inspiring passage. It was as if I had descended
through the very Earth itself, into a fault line that opened
to a very mystical land. It took my breath away, stopped me
still, and I knew I would return even before I had experienced
the magical landscape of this place. (If you want a look just
do a web search and you'll find sites with pictures that do
not do it justice but have beauty to them.) You simply relax
and let go of the rest of the world to enter another time...another
place. It is indeed a borderland and its doors are wide open.
The cleansing process begins automatically
here. You simply open as a channel and your spirit will awaken
instantly. It is obvious that those who live here do live in
another world. Everyone is well aware of the treasure that exists
in Sedona. Water is one of the main elements of nature and as
I made my way through the Oak Creek Canyon area the sound of
the rushing water mingled with that of the light rain that was
falling and I felt a if I had undergone yet another natural
purification ritual. Simply being near it seemed to be enough
and this is often the case as a relaxing walk or just sitting
by water has healing effects on the mind, body, and spirit.
I learned a great deal about Sedona
in the time I was there. I was able to visit some very special
locations and it will always summon me to return again and again.
it is impossible to tell you everything about each location,
there are simply too many for the space I have here, but I have
made a selection of what I
feel are some of the most interesting and productive sites.
What follows, then, will be an annotated index. Pay attention
to the names, they are a good example of how to recognize vortex
areas from a map; and remember that names are strong indicators
of what can be found at a given location.
I must precede this with a final
reminder to remember to listen to the Voice of the Land, to
acknowledge the Spirit of Place and leave a token of your appreciation.
Manners are always important. Gifts are to be received in these
places but there should always be an exchange of some sort.
If you have nothing to give, you can at least send love and
healing energy back to Mother Earth (something I recommend doing
anyway). I do have a small pouch that I carry my token offerings
in and keep with me when I'm traveling or visiting the centers.
it works for me, I'm always prepared, and it's a good habit
to adopt. It does not have to be anything fancy. Even a folded
cloth will do. What is important is that you leave something
of value to you personally that truly is a gift of your spirit.
The Vortexes of Sedona:
Airport Mesa
This is an electric vortex, and if you will recall that means
that the site emits energies outwardly in an upward spiral.
Here subtle energies seep deep into the senses as you first
arrive. It is also a good example of how encroachment threatens
these sites as it is seated alongside the highway amid homes
to either side. It is an example of how these sites can take
you away from these same encroachments. Once you have made your
way to the dome (a few yards from the highway) you seem to forget
it all and begin to focus. Almost all of Sedona can be viewed
from this site. It is an uplifting and easily accessible location.
Your conscious senses awaken to
a new level at Airport Mesa and this heightened awareness is
capable of opening doors. Strong energies flow in numerous spots
along the trails. I favor the sumit of the dome and its lone
tree. Here the energy seems to be spiritually lifting and thoughts
are expanded as meditation comes quite easily. The tree is a
good visual for shamanically centering yourself and the view
is spectacular. It is a busy site with the comings and goings
of visitors due to it being the most accessible vortex in the
region, but it does not matter once you are there. It had rained
shorty before I arrived and the sun broke through just as I
reached the summit. Once at the top there was a subtle feeling
of well-being, a natural response to an electric vortex. This
site is known to trigger altered states of consciousness and
psychic experiences. There is less visitor activity further
along the back trails and there are Medicine Wheels that lend
themselves to more private work. The region between the two
small hills and the gorge to the West are full of energy since
this vortex is not resigned to a specific center for experiencing
the energies of the site. There are multiple power spots that
you will begin to recognize once you are there. They will simply
feel right to you, speak to you, and you'll know.
If you are having difficulty finding
them in any way there are usually local people willing to point
them out to you as well as share their own knowledge of the
local lore. The trails are clearly laid out from much use and
all you really need to do is follow them until it feels right
to stop. Because electric energy is an emitted force it seeps
upward toward peaks and ridges to be released. I explained this
process earlier when I spoke of Feng Shui. For this reason the
dome is an excellent place to tap into it. The energy here is
both strong and subtle as it aids you in heightening
your awareness, psychic talents, visions, and aligning your
body's power centers.
Apache Leap:
This site magnetic has been known to have a negative effect
on some people. Perhaps because of those who have gone to their
death here. What takes place at a site is often absorbed into
the energy of the land and can be transferred through your receptivity
or that of the Spirit of Place. This is a site of much tragedy
and many can feel it while others seem to be unaffected. If
you go and it does not seem to weigh heavily on you it is an
excellent place to leave things behind, things like bad habits,
depression, illnesses, character flaws, anything of yourself
you no longer wish to maintain.
Bell Rock:
There are 19 alignments to other Ley Lines and vortexes that
span the globe at Bell Rock. This is an electric energy site
meaning you can expect enlightenment and a recharging of your
energies through your work. It stands in the distance looking
much like a large bell. Its peak is an ideal place for energy
to emerge. It is said that the summit is a place of the Eagle
Spirit and will aid you in channeling your energies into Otherworlds.
To reach this location you must be an experienced climber (which
I am not). The site offers clarity of your intuitive processes
and the Voice of the land as well as that of the Spirit of Place
will speak loudly to you. Here you will find blessings and protection
as you reach upward to enlightenment. The Spirit of Place residing
at this location will aid you in achieving all you are worthy
of having. That worth is found not in material goods but in
those aspects of yourself that are your motivating forces. If
you are acting with impeccable intent you will be found worthy
of the Gifts of Spirit.
There is a great deal of talk about
Bell Rock being a portal to alien life forms (and these would
come under the shamanic title of Star People). UFO's and aliens
are not my areas of expertise (I saw none when there), but it
is said that there are many sightings in this region. I cannot
attest to this myself. I do know that this is a place to receive
the energies and information that come from Spirit. There is
a relaxed and less serious atmosphere here. At the base, strong
currents of the vortex are experienced by many who visit and
climbing to the top is not necessary to achieve results from
your work. Do not be surprised if you come upon a shamanic ceremony
drawing on these energies, it is a popular site for such purposes.
If you do, simply go about your business and be respectful of
what others are in the process of accomplishing.
Bell Rock provides an efficient
honing ability to intuitive work. This is a site where mysteries
unfold and truths are presented in a clear honest fashion. It
is almost playful at times, and you should of course follow
your instincts when you are here. Tuning into the Spirit of
Place will allow you to work efficiently and effectively as
this entity is one of joyous celebration and uplifting to your
own nature. It is as if Mother Earth were saying: "Go ahead,
eat your desert first.".
Boynton Canyon:
There are both electric and magnetic energies in a well-balanced
atmosphere at this vortex. It is a good location for all types
of work and seeking. it is said that an EArth Goddess dwells
here. Legends abound about this being a very magical place.
It feels as if you had known it long ago in some lost memory
and it is here that many individuals come to work on regression,
memory recall, and ancestral
lineage channels. There is a presence here that reaches beyond
the Leys and vortex. You may experience initiation into many
mysteries and find that your psychic abilities are greatly enhanced
after visiting this location. Lives have been changed in Boynton
Canyon so remember: things happen for a reason
and the
reason is always *good*. The local Indians are aware of the
Earth Goddess and they do not enter without a purpose. It is
a strong portal to Otherworlds that lead to considerable transformations.
Do not go to picnic. You will discover that the forces at play
require respect and that there is a sacredness connected firmly
to Spirit. Let your heart lead you into this canyon.
Spider came to me here in vision
and brought friends. It was quite the journey. I'm sure this
is due to the fact that being a vortex of both electric and
magnetic energies there is a certain demand for balance. Many
believe the spire known as the Kachina Woman to be the sacred
center. here deep levels within you will become active and it
is not uncommon to feel a desire to offer up prayers. Shamanic
journeys (yes!), out-of-body flight, and a sense of being within
the womb of mother Earth are common. Traveling deeper into the
canyon these aspects become even more evident as the oneness
takes hold and you truly walk between the worlds.
Capitol Butte or Thunder Mountain:
This is a site known for its high concentration of lightning
strikes. The shaman would say: "these strikes are the paths
of Power", places where it travels back and forth. It is
a good indication of where the name Thunder Mountain took its
form. On its western ridge can be seen the head of a lizard...a
place of Dreams. If you look from the North it becomes Eagle....a
place of prayer and enlightenment. A shaman would watch these
forms for signs of change in times of encroaching development
in the area. knowing that the land will change its face, it
would be expected that Lizard or Eagle might begin to turn its
head or look in another direction to focus its energies elsewhere.
These would be strong indicators that the Ley Lines would change
(as some are now doing) and move along another pathway--a very
important piece of shamanic information. Being one of the most
prominent locations in the Sedona region, it is seen as a sentinel
and a place strong with Spirit. There are several Leys that
converge making it the central hub of the Sedona area. This
is a good place to experience dreams, to seek enlightenment,
and illumination. Remember to take this canyon very seriously;
it is not something to simply fool around with recklessly.

Sedona (Continued.):
Cathedral Rock or Red Rock Crossing:
This is the strongest magnetic vortex and most famous rock formation
in Sedona. There are so many different power centers here that
you will have no difficulty what-so-ever in finding a place
in which to work. The Spirit of Place is quite evident in the
profound sacredness that immediately commands respect at this
location. Love is felt along with the presence of prayers that
have been left to be lifted up into the air. I had the sensation
that the majority of them are answered. It is a vortex of peace,
of spiritual enlightenment, and a place of healing. Dreams are
frequently reported on location or shortly after a visit and
it is a good site if you are in need of activation
within the Dream Lodge. Its magnetism sets all into place as
mind, body, and spirit are easily unified. I was gifted with
being energized in a firm and most positive way. You will feel
touched by Spirit in an experience of rebirth leaving you unable
to deny that power exists at this site. The experience can range
from subtle to intense as your body is rejuvenated in a harmony
that lends an inner confidence to your work. A feeling of wholeness
and wellness permeates and there is a strong sense of the Divine,
almost as if Spirit were looking over your shoulder and directing
you to see all that should be recognized before you.
Details seem to stand out and mirror
their impressions deep within you. It has to be one of the most
inspirational and refreshing sites I've visited. Cathedral Rock
and the Spirit of Place present seem to ensure that your consciousness
is clarified and awareness honed so thoughts and perceptions
are unquestionably aligned and heightened. Your intent must
be pure--this is not hard to accomplish since the sanctity of
the vortex draws that from you naturally. Order is easily found
for all areas of your life. It is a good place to go when transformation
or change are being sought and old ways are to be yielded up
to Spirit. A definite land temple.
Otherworld experiences are common,
but this site does react strongly to lunar phases. What this
means is that the energies fluctuate and become stronger with
the full of the Moon, weakening as it wanes. Intuitive reactions
are your best guide and will speak loud and clear if you let
them. The site is extremely easy to tune into for beginners.
Your purpose must be focused and the vortex tends to lend itself
to serving you in that respect. It also tends to ground you.
It is a power site of great magnitude that will allow you to
reset your priorities and help to bring about positive changes
in your life. It does require one thing from you: you must continue
to work with your newly opened channels when you get back home.
The stream that flows through here
will cleanse and carry away your spiritual and physical ailments.
It will heal and you will recognize this as the nurturance of
Mother Earth being strongly experienced. Cathedral Rock is a
very relaxing and soothing place to visit, you can feel the
energy rushing and pooling in the mountain stream and the voice
of the rapids will speak to you in the pure clean air. The beautiful
red rocks that surround this area mingled with Spring's budding
trees and shrubs when I visited. The Vernal Equinox was not
yet quite begun, the Moon nearly full, and fresh rains (again)
had darkened the face while they softened the Earth. It was
truly a magical experience and I left feeling uplifted, energetic,
and loved. I know it is a site I would really enjoy returning
to again and again.
As the Spirit of Place howled its
face of many lines I was able to read some of the great wisdom
hidden there. Cathedral Rock is one of my favorite sites and
preserved by the National Forest Service. You can see the towers
that are said to be a man and woman with their backs turned
to each other, and what appears to me to be a child standing
at their side. Legend speaks of the man and woman having been
deeply in love. Over time they began picking at one and other
and making fun of each other's short comings yet retained their
pride in their own abilities and gifts. Both began to feel unappreciated
and disrespected, and because of their own actions that is exactly
what happened. Having grown apart each felt they were giving
far more than they were receiving from the other. One day they
came to recognize that they were both dependent upon one and
other yet needing to look their own way. Today they stand back
to back, still in love and as a reminder that they need one
and other and need to retain their independence while cherishing
the value in all that the other is and does. They are the sentinels
of this vortex that stand as reminders to us all to remember
that we must give as well as take.
Hundreds of faces seemed to be looking
back at me from the cliffs as if they were silent attendants
to the Spirit of Place that resides so strongly here. This was
felt even more intently as I made my way further back along
the stream's trail, beyond the flat boulders that line the shore
to an area of sanctuary. There are many prayer shrines of stacked
stones along the rocky banks of the water's edge. This place
stills the heart and excites the inner spirit. There is a need
to speak softly here, a need to show honor and respect. It is
a natural temple and the sermon seems to come directly from
the Spirit of Place. Stones stacked 7 stone high...prayer shrines
to the Seven Sacred Directions for those who were loved or in
need. There is a legend that states a great teacher of the Spirit
World holds instruction at Cathedral Rock working through the
energies of the vortex. This teacher is there to enlighten and
assist all who come to this sacred site in search of guidance
or healing. I believe there is great truth to this legend for
I experienced him myself. There is the masculine energy around
the Spirit of Place and a nurturing feminine energy around yet
a second...the sentinels? It is a bit obvious that I am partial
to the site. I felt an instant kinship here and an innate understanding
about working with the power of this vortex the moment I arrived.
It was like a warm embrace, a welcome invitation, and I assure
you that it has much to offer and some very special gifts to
bestow.
Courthouse Butte:
This vortex is noted for its rock formation that looks as if
the Spirit of Place were looking up to Spirit for an answer.
Perhaps it is. The top of the head is to the West. Spiritually
this would mean that the Spirit of Place was one of introspection
looking for enlightenment. There is a legend that says the mouth
holds great treasure. To the shaman such treasure would be the
insight and word of Spirit that comes through here. It is said
that the Indians come to the butte hoping to resolve disagreements.
it alludes to a strong sense of right and wrong, of law and
order, of relationships and establishing healing harmony at
this site. Courthouse Butte is an excellent place to go if you
are troubled and need to make an important decision, work out
a specific problem, or are struggling to balance your spiritual
gifts with your life path.
Throughout all of Sedona there are
mundane to exquisite examples of land temples. These shrines
to the land have in their patterns the sanctity of Mother Earth.
They take the form of humans, animals, even chakras, and can
be viewed from a variety of different perspectives. The people
of Sedona are well aware of the nature of this area and there
are many willing to help you find your way, out of generous
hearts and those offering services for a fee. Tours offer many
insights if you wish to learn more and perhaps have a better
understanding of each specific location. You can find Native
American and New Age spiritual guides as well as shopkeepers
and bookstores that are more than willing to help you experience
and explore Sedona. Once you visit you will have made your connection
and it will most certainly call you to you come again soon.
I love the place!

Finally:
Mother's Other Little Helpers:
No work on Sacred Energy lines and power centers can be complete
without an honorable mention to places outside the United States
since the Leys are the Web of Life...of the world. I believe
it is important to note that these sites complement each other
throughout their global placements. They, too, ae all interconnected
to the vast system of energies that span Mother Earth (the Grid
as it's commonly called today). All are helpful n dispersing
that energy into nature and stimulating the cycles of life as
we know it both physically and spiritually. Throughout these
sites can be found monoliths, stone circles, all the things
found here in the United States are found globally. I would
like to begin by directing you to Peru where South of Lima is
the Nazca Strip. here the desert Pampas offers up its aerial
runways and wide variety of geoglyphs. Sacred Peruvian Inca
sites are called Huacas and exits as formations within the structure
of the elements of nature. there are between thee and thirteen
found along each of their Spirit Paths and generally in places
where water changes direction. Some are known to have cosmic
correlations.
Cuzco has its puma. Depictions of
the shamanic flying buck have been found in places such as Africa,
Siberia, and Mexico. There can be found the disembodied eye,
goose, eagle, feathers, and birds all of which are symbolic
of the shamanic journey, states of trance, and Medicine. Most
effigy figures are created on hills where Earth energies merge
along the tops and sides. Carved figures stand hundreds of feet
high or cover acres of land.
In Mexico, the Olmec culture is
represented in San Lorenzo by a bird that is just under a mile
in length. Building went according to cosmic design in both
the Mayan temples of Guatemala and within the Aztec culture.
La Quemada in Zazatecas, Mexico, is home to 100 miles of roads.
In the Yucatan the Mayan culture has evidenced itself through
the building of their celestial temples, pyramids, hieroglyphs
and codices. This is seen as well in Belize, El Salvadore, and
Honduras. Chichen Itza, Mexico is home to many roadways and
its famous complex.
On the other side of the world Egyptian
pyramids were built based on cosmic mathematics and located
along Leys where the structures would enhance the energies present
there. The grandest of all is the Great Pyramid of Giza. Greece
has its sites where the Horns of the Goddess can be seen in
the land. Their temples have been erected to honor Her as well
as other deities--perhaps one of the most famous being the Temple
at Delphi.
England is famous for places such
as Bath, Rollright, Sillbury Huill, and of course Stonehenge
all of which are known for being ceremonial and healing sites.
Hoarstone in Enstone at Oxfordshire has a legend that tells
of the stone that moves of its own will. There is Stanton Drew
at Avon where a stone circle is said to be formed from the bodies
of those who transgressed the Sabbath. There is Men-an-Tol in
Cornwall with its sacred holed stone that was used for healing.
Many sites in Britain claim that each time the stones are counted
the numbers change and therefore it is impossible to achieve
an accurate accounting of them.
The Glastonbury Zodiac in Somerset
can be seen spread over a 33 mile area. It covers both natural
and artificial formations that create the ancient constellations
of the zodiac in their proper placements. These symbols stretch
for miles over the Avalon of Arthurian lore and are depicted
from lost time and shadows as the symbology of a gone era. They
are best seen from the air where the phoenix of Aquarius stands
out with its beak pointing out springs and its head resting
upon the Glastonbury Tor.
The white Lady of Ballafreer is found
on the Isle of Man. This is a site where women about to marry
go to be blessed. New Grange, Ireland and the Mound of Knowth
in Boyne Valley just north of Dublin are known for their vortexes.
Another famous site is the northern part of the country where
vows of those who become engaged are sealed at the Stone of
Doagh. Kempstock Stan in Gourock, Scotland is a site where newlyweds
sought the blessing of their marriage. There are sites at Lourdes
in France, Jerusalem and Mecca in Israel, at Machu Picchu in
Peru; and of course Ayers Rock and Ngama in Australia where
the hillside boulder depicts the Spirit of Place. It is here
that he Aborigines have their Dreamtime pilgrimages covering
hundreds of miles marked by numerous sacred sites, each with
its own legend and all unitign to comprise the myth of the people.
These are journeys in which the
people and the land form a union comprising the Dreamtime in
an Otherworld setting. A specific meditative focus during the
pilgrimage causes mutual and multiple spiritual experiences
that remain with the individuals. These experiences are reinforced
each time the pilgrimage is made for they begin with a focus
that is maintained throughout the entire journey. Each shrine
takes them one step deeper into the process. With this in mind
it is easy to understand the pilgrimages of the Amerindians
into the Southwest, for they, too, attend the sacred sites and
walk the Spirit Paths. Often the form of a serpent or dragon
will take shape in the landscape itself. These forms are symbolic
of wisdom and the ability to transcend to other realms be they
inner dimensions or outer worlds. Geographically, the natural
land temples can open to us and reveal forms that hint at what
they have to offer. An understanding of the shamanic and mystical
symbology is necessary in comprehending the universal rock art
at locations worldwide.
You may begin to grasp the depths
to which this can be taken when examining the basic knowledge
within the confines of these articles. You have been given a
close look at Otherworlds, at the entities that dwell within
them. You have been given exercises to open the portals of altered
consciousness and trance states. It is important for you to
remember that as you turn within the Medicine Wheel you are
creating a spiral that increases the vibratory rate of the energy
present there. Each Dance touches another in the Dance of Life.
Psychic skills are generally relative to the element you were
born under and your own nature. Air would tend to grant you
skills of the mind through sound and thought. Fire would grant
you skills of the body through emotion and intent. Water would
grant you skills of the mind through the senses and sight. Earth
would grant you skills of the body through omens and wisdom.
Thus when you face a direction it allows you to receive those
impressions. Turning your back to a direction allows you to
send them. Together a telepathic balance of the two directions
creates a wavelength. Thus the North-South and East-West paths
present balance along their lines.
Study well and learn what you can
that holds interest and meaning for you. When you are ready
to explore the Leys you must begin by gathering up your things,
your journal and pen, and set out to walk them. You may do it
locally or make a pilgrimage of your own, but a visit to the
vortexes and sacred sites is necessary so that you can open
to them and awaken your own spirituality.
In this way your experience will be one of touching the face
of enlightenment, spiritual growth and healing, as well as great
inspiration.
I invite you to grow beyond your
dreams and to explore the Sacred Energy lines as well as through
the vortexes and Spirits of Place found at such sites. Through
the eyes of the shamanic pathways you will come to discover
your own path and your own Medicine. Let the voice of your inner
spirit guide you and learn to listen well. Spirit will share
the wisdom and teachings with you when you are willing to open
and receive them. Having known the Sacred Energy and Spirit
of Place numerous times in my own journeys I am well aware of
the exciting growth and enlightenment that awaits you. Let your
senses keen and eagerly embrace the teachings for you will feel
more alive than you ever have and life will become your greatest
adventure. May Spirit walk at your side always lighting your
path and my you see the wisdom of the ages unfold before you.
May you receive many blessings!
