Soul vs Spirit Discussion
by Lotus
It has been said there may be difficulties
in defining and understanding what "soul" and "spirit"
mean to each of us since these words are employed in varying
senses within the different context of beliefs. I would like
to ask the SL Community to jump in and share your thoughts.
Do you believe there is a difference between our soul and our
spirit ... and if so, what do you think the difference is...?
WolfSpirit:
Very interesting
question Lotus. I read somewhere recently that our soul is only
with us for a short number of lifetimes to help us learn certain
lessons, whereas our Spirit obviously is eternal. This makes
sense to me, but I can't say whether I agree or disagree with
the statement. Hmm will have to think on this and come back
later.
Marila:
It may be
difficult to explain in words what I understand using "Spirit"
and "Soul". These words may be combined with the experiences
and (inner) knowings each one of us holds. Words can often be
misunderstood and for some things words are not so very appropriate...All
this is because I feel that each "definition" given
here by me may be misunderstood. So - this is what I "know"
- in a short version. The Soul "is" - it is the Great
Mystery... "I am this - you are this - we all are this..."
The Spirit - walking through time and space - is coming home
- home to the Soul - to find it is one - All-that-Is... "I
am this - you are this - we all are this..."
Wisowl:
I
use soul and spirit as one and the same. In a more Christian
surrounding I would use the word soul exclusively; in *mixed*
company soul/spirit. I would love to be able to use just simply
the word spirit. That is the right word for me to use. Like
in God/Creator/The Great Spirit and all us *little* spirits!
CinnamonMoon:
Interesting
question and I agree, Lotus, it does vary in meaning to different
people. To me they are one and the same.
Minna:
This is very interesting
to me. I have always been confused - there is a verse in the
Bible - Hebrews 4:12 (I looked it up today) that I have always
wondered about:
For the word of God is quick,
and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing
even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit...
It is preceded in verses 9 and
10 by the statement: There remaineth a rest to the people
of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased
from is own works, as God did from his.
I wonder if the soul (usually,
I just say - human definitions - who knows??) might perhaps
be something of an individual container for the spirit which
is connected in and with Spirit.
"For he that is entered into
his rest"...I wonder if this means something like, for
he that is connected with his Source. Words are strange. Since
I sometimes have trouble calling "god", "God",
I have been calling It, "Spirit". So in my thinking
my definition - if I had one - might be almost the same as Mari-la*'s
- only turn the words around. Perhaps for me soul=Mari's spirit
and vice versa. I picture Source, an amazing boundless intelligent
creative energy, as us folks as connected sort of sparks emanating
from Source, but directly connected, still 'of' and 'in', and
perhaps the mechanics of this connection I might call the soul.
The essence, our essence, I might call spirit and our individual
expression I might call soul. This morning in my morning musings
I was thinking about this and kept thinking of energy terms
with the words 'generator', 'alternator', and then I thought
of 'transducer'. Here's the definition of transducer: Main Entry:
trans·duc·er Pronunciation: -'dü-s&r,
-'dyü- Function: noun : a device that is actuated by power
from one system and supplies power usually in another form to
a second system <a loudspeaker is a transducer that transforms
electrical signals into sound energy>
Perhaps our soul might be the transducer
for the Source of Spirit and thus our spirit. In looking up
the definition for 'generator', one definition struck me in
particular - the Van de Graaf generator:
Main Entry: Van de Graaff generator
Pronunciation: 'van-d&-"graf- Function: noun Etymology:
Robert J. Van de Graaff died 1967 American physicist : an apparatus
for the production of electrical discharges at high voltage
commonly consisting of an insulated hollow conducting sphere
that accumulates in its interior the charge continuously conveyed
from a source of direct current by an endless belt of flexible
non-conducting material
I was wondering - perhaps the soul
is the container, or 'hollow sphere', or 'hollow bone' which
accumulates the charge continuously conveyed from a source of
direct current - the spirit which is both of and with Source.
Ok - I'm getting way over my head here, and my husband is the
electrical engineer, while I'm the retired analyst/housewife.
But thank you for the question, Lotus - this has been tickling
my brain. SEDD, I know you would associate and understand the
related physics stuff here, but I am pretty much at the end
of my full-brain thinking. So those are my thoughts.
Lotus:
Wisowl you writes: Like
in God/Creator/The Great Spirit and all us *little* spirits!
I like that, Wiseowl "and all us *little* spirits. Thanks
so much for your input.
Minna, I read your post with great
interest and the following was an excellent analogy ... I
was wondering - perhaps the soul is the container, or 'hollow
sphere', or 'hollow bone' which accumulates the charge continuously
conveyed from a source of direct current - the spirit which
is both of and with Source. I found your interpretation
very interesting in particular seeing the soul as an empty container
... hollow bone ... very good. Thank you for jumping in. (((Cinn)))
thank you!
Wolfie, looking forward to reading
more of your thoughts on the question .
Northernwolf:
I'm not too sure to be honest, but since most of
the teachings I receive deal with the inner spirit and I figure
a soul to be an inner thingamajig I suppose they would be one
and the same just a different name.
Unregistered Guest:
Our soul is what makes
us and our spirit is what we share. The spirit is ever lasting.
It goes on and on beyond infinity. Our soul is what is given
to us at conception and we are to learn lessons from it. I truly
do believe that we are all spirits.
Lotus:
I am enjoying reading each
post and how in our uniqueness we interpret soul and spirit.
VikingThor:
Hi new to the list, Scorpio
male, I have been studying lifelong on this and other subjects.
I think we are the spirit in this present life, and pieces of
are soul, are trying to move into the present as we learn the
lessons, we came to learn and understand. I think when we die,
we leave a little piece of us behind, that just didn't get it.
I have had many past lives and I have these lives trying to
move forward, as my spiritual vibration, goes up. I know of
at least 19 past lives I have had. Just keep yourself in the
present time and the rest of your soul will move forward. Thanks.
WolfSpirit:
VikingThor,
Welcome to the Lodge! I was very interested in the views you
shared here: I have vague past life memories, but only really
snippets...Perhaps you might want to introduce yourself to us
in the Welcome Centre and tell us a little bit more of your
journey to date
sounds fascinating!
SisterCyber:
Do you believe there
is a difference between our soul and our spirit ... and if so,
what do you think the difference is...?
As a Christian, I would have believed
that both are the same; just different terminologies. I am now
of the current thought that spirit ~ rather "Inner Spirit"
is instinct. I do not believe either spirit or soul are separate
entities though ~ but maybe more like levels of instinct. Like
when you look at the physical body, you have skin, blood, bones,
muscle, all making up the body. And like
when you look at the mind, you have
conscious, unconscious, subconscious, superconscious. Well,
I imagine the same concept with levels of instinct.
VikingThor:
Ok, I am 49 yr. young,
and have had ability's from a very young age, my mother didn't
want to hear things so I suppressed them for many yrs. About
5 yrs. ago or more I decided to go after and learn more of what
I was not looking at. I started taking class, meditation 1 and
2, you learn grounding and centering, energy types and uses,
earth energy and cosmic energy, there is a lot of exercises.
second group was a healing class 1 and 2, this not the typical
healing class it is an aura and chakra, cleaning and healing
work, works very good. I can go on with more specifics if anyone
wants. I can do sick bed healing, healings at a distance, this
takes two people, one too be the body and one to do the healing
I have had astral body healings this is very good and feels
great. they take your astral body out and heal it and then return
it.
I have taken a class on kundalini
energy, this the most powerful we have as a body, I can project
the aura and the kundalini energy, I am careful with the kund.,
my girlfriend says it makes her heart feel weird, don't want
to damage her or anyone else for that matter. I have my reiki
master, this a feel good energy that does good for everyone.
Where I want was a physic ins. and they teach clairvoyance I
didn't do that one yet and may not, they told many times I was
one of the most clear seeing people there ever had come thru
there. I see and feel things in a different way than they do.
All of the above as started, opening new doors to me I see things
and feels different stuff, I can tell you when ghost are around,
I feel the different energy's, sometimes they will talk to me,
This is where the past life readings have come from, they look
at three past lives and see what youre working on in this
life, I have been Native American three times Viking a bunch
of times a English town mayor, a rich Frenchmen, twice, to name
a few. I have a spirit guide I work with and talk to him daily,
I talk to god, once or twice a week.
Spiritual beliefs mirror Native American
and pagan, and one creator and Christ. We are here to learn
the lesson we have chosen before we took on this body and taken
care of it. Learn and move up or ignore and do it again. I am
half Norse, 1/4 Scot and 1/4 Irish. My business partner is a
½ Yakima and 1/2 Nez Pierce Indian. We are also good
friends. I have to cut this short so any questions I will be
glad to answer.
Lotus:
What is the Soul? "The
Creator gathered together all of creation and said," I
want to hide something from the humans until they are ready
for it. It is the realization that they create their own reality.
The eagle said "Give it to me I will take it to the moon"
"The Creator said, "No. One day they will go there
and find it". The salmon said, "I will take it to
the bottom of the ocean." "No they will go there too."
The buffalo said, "I will bury it on the great plains.
"The Creator said, "They will cut into the skin of
the earth and find it even there." Then the Grandmother
mole, who lives in the breast of Mother Earth, and who has no
physical eyes but sees with spiritual eyes, said: "Put
it inside them." And the Creator said, "It is done."

(((SC))) Quote: I am now of
the current thought that spirit ~ rather "Inner Spirit"
is instinct. Could it be the "Inner Spirit"
that you call instinct is your inner voice ... ?
VikingThor, I have to admit, I am
a little confused myself. I applaud all that you have learned
but I'm not sure what your last post means ... are you just
sharing with us your knowledge?
